In the Book " This Was My Valley" by Fred M Burnett Phillip Burnet was mentioned as a favorite with all the residents of the North Fork Valley. He visited his neighbors and often spent the night with them. He was an excellent hunter and fisherman. His legacy was in story telling. He would introduce his stories with " I saw it coming or, I heard the leaves rattle or, I heard a twig break or, would begin with "I saw it coming one in a gang, and three by themselves." His factual stories were based on personal experiences. For several years during the 1890's Mr James L Alexander of the old Battery Park Hotel in Asheville had Phillip as an annual guest. Each season guest would arrive for a 2 week stay, and Phillip would entertain them with stories that kept the guest in suspense. His speech was unique. On this unique occasion Phillip dressed in home spun and home made clothing. He was wiry, slender as a hickory sapling, and just as straight backed. On such occasions Phillip would wear a cutaway coat that came to his knees. His knee boots were tanned. He smoked a homemade corncob bowl, reed stem, home made pipe.

About 1850 he decided to move to Texas. Phillip had a lot of children and G/Children. The prepration took about a year. and once the journey was under way it was noted around Vicksburg, Mississippi they had to build flotation rafts, which took several weeks. After a safe crossing of the Mississippi their food was runing low, and they planted a garden, and killed game for meat. It was also mentioned the water tasted bad and Phillip was already yearning "Oh! for one gourd of cool water for the old chesnut root spring back in North Fork".They finally arrived, reaching their relatives in Texas. It was good to see family members, but they never unloaded their wagons, but on the early afternoon of the second day they headed back home. On arrival back in North Carolina it was 18 months to the day on the round trip journey. According to best accounts at age 99 Phillip Burnet was still a fine fisherman and dead shot with his old muzzle loading rifle, MATILDA" he named for his wife Mary.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Mar 13 2023, 19:22:19 UTC
