Birth: 1758 Halifax County North Carolina, USA Death: 1830 Crawford County Illinois, USA

Thomas was born about 1758, probably in Halifax County, North Carolina. He appears to have been the most adventure-some of my ancestors. He got around! He was a Revolutionary war soldier. He married Sarah, called "Sally", a native of New Jersey. She surely was also a woman of splendid vigor and spirit. One must be curious about the illusive beacon that seemed to draw them ever to the very margin of settlement on the frontier. During their life together, Thomas and Sally lived in several localities in North Carolina, Georgia, KY, and IL. In each locale, Tom seems to have obtained land. They were in Surry County, North Carolina by 1782; in 1787 they were in Duplin County, North Carolina; from about 1788 to 1795 they were in Wilkes County, Georgia; then they "pulled up stakes" and moved to Henry County, KY where they remained for three years. Next, they went further into the wilds to Warren County, KY; there on the Barren Watercourse, Thomas seems to have accumulated his largest land holding. 1800, Green Co., KY; 1811, Lawrence Co., IL; 1815, Henry Co., KY; and from 1820, Crawford-Lawrence Co. area, IL. Thomas was a signer of the following addressed to General Gibson from Fort Allison, Lawrence Co., IL on Sep. 9, 1812: "Situation precarious as upper fort was broken up and has shook 'likely to fall except it get a brace,' pray that you excellancy grant us the men that were stationed for our relief."

Most of the material on the Highsmith family is derived from Highsmiths in America, compiled by Annette Paris Highsmith, edited and enlarged by Chris H. Bailey (Provo, UT 1971, and Highsmiths in American Addendum, Second Edition, compiled by Delwood S. Jackson (Cincinnati, OH 1985).
