The son of Benjamin & Lydia (Mylin) Haverstick, he married Mary L. Snavely and fathered Alfred Cookman (b. 09/02/55, d. 12/29/57), Cambridge Graham (b. 03/02/57, d. 12/29/57), Mary Elizabeth Susan (b. 04/02/67, 02/05/68), and likely others. In 1860, he was a merchant living in Mechanicsburg. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia November 28, 1861, as a private with Co. B, 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry (70th Pa). Admitted to the division hospital at Gaines Mill, Virginia, on June 14, 1862, he was captured when Confederate forces overran the hospital. His captors incarcerated him at Richmond, Virginia, and paroled him at City Point, Virginia, on July 22.
