William J. Keener served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War in 2nd Company A, 25th Virginia Infantry Regiment (Heck's). His brother, Jonathan, fought on the Union side. He enlisted on June 21, 1863 in Fetterman, West Virginia. He and his brother Elias were captured by the Union on May 12, 1864 at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia when "most of the regiment was captured at the Muleshoe Salient along with the rest of Johnson’s Division." He was sent to Point Lookout POW Camp in Maryland, arriving on May 18, 1864. He was transferred to Elmira Prison in New York on July 30, 1864, where he arrived on August 2, 1864. He swore an oath of allegiance to the United States in Elmira on June 16, 1865 and was released.
