About Menachem Mendel Halberstam, Admur Stropkow-New York

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Halberstam (1873–1954), tntzb"h. the son of Rabbi Avraham Shalom Halberstam was appointed chief rabbi of Stropkov and head of the Talmud Torah till WWII. After WWII, he was first a refugee in Switzerland and then sailed to the US, where he continued to be head of the Stropkover community until his death in 1954.

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Halberstam of Stropkov, author of Divrei Menachem, uncle of Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga Lifshitz (1954). During the Holocaust, the Rebbe initially hid in Budapest, then, with the Nazi occupation of Hungary, was taken to Bratislava, Slovakia--along with his wife, Esther, a granddaughter, Chana Shaindel Halberstam (later Rubin) and one son ?Chaim. Unfortunately his wife Esther and his son were rounded up on Yom Kippur 1944 when they went to shul, (Hashem yikom damam), so only he and his granddaughter Shaindale survived. They were together in a bunker with R' Weissmandl and the Gellis brothers near Bratislava until rescued by Kasztner to Switzerland. He lived in New York after the war, teaching at the Stropkover Yeshiva in Williamsburg. He authored the sefer Divrei Menachem. - Source. He is buried on Har Hamenuchos in the Chelkas Harabanim, near his great-grandson, Yechezkel Shraga Rubin, his granddaughter Shaindale's son.
