About R’ Moises Tauber
R’ Moises Tauber was a twin. He was named in honor of two great-grandfathers, Moises Tauber (1725-1790) and Rabbi Moises Knopfelmacher (1718-1798). Moises Tauber remained in Holesov and was still alive when the 1880 census was taken. He died in Holesov in 1882, age 79.
As a younger son, Moises Tauber was not allowed to marry under the 1726 Familiants Law. About 1833, he and Rachel Husserl, b. 1813, were united in a Jewish ceremony, but not legally married. They lived together as husband and wife for over 30 years before — following the relaxation of the restrictions — they were formally married on or about 27 Dec 1865. All of their children were born illegitimate and their births were listed under their mother’s surname of Husserl. Between, 27 Dec 1865 and early 1866, however, Moses Tauber acknowledged their four surviving children (Sara, Abraham, Amalia, and Michael), whereupon they were all declared legitimate.
Rachel Husserl, aka Rosalia Husserl, was born in Holesov, 1813, the daughter of Gabriel Husserl (1755-1817) and his wife, Bluma-Sara (Fischer) Husserl (1769-1841).
