About Leopold Tauber

Leopold Tauber was a twin to his brother, Moises. He had the Hebrew name of "Aryeh Jehuda Leib", and, through his mother, was a member of the rabbinical Teomim-Zwillinger family.

Leopold Tauber was born in House No. 43, Holesov, Moravia on 28 April 1803. As a younger son, Leopold had very few rights in his native Moravia and, as soon as he reached his majority, he crossed the border into Hungary. He lived in Trencin City where he likely lived in the household of his Knopfelmacher relatives who had already settled there. He became a Hebrew elementary schoolteacher — a profession he continued in for his entire adult life. Of note, his maternal grandfather, Abraham Zwillinger (1755-1824), was also “kinderlehrer” — a children’s teacher.

Shortly following his first marriage in Trencin, 1833, Leopold and his wife moved to Baan, Trencin County (now Banovce nad Bebranou, Slovakia), where he taught school. His first wife,Chaja-Rosel [aka Rosalia, aka Rosi] (Kohn-Zerkowitz), died in Baan in 1836, whereupon he m. 2nd, c1837, her younger sister, Nanetta Kohn-Zerkowitz. They remained in Baan until about 1843 when they returned to Trencin City. However, they appear to have moved back and forth between Baan and Trencin City between 1844 and 1851, as one of their children (Bertha, b. 1850) was born in Baan, while two others (Simon, b. 1844, and Ernestina, b. 1848) were born in Trencin City. All of their youngest children were b. in Trencin City (1852-1860).

It should be noted that in the 1848 Jewish census of Trencin, at least one of Leopold’s children was omitted — likely an entry error: Moritz, age 7. Included in the census were Aron, age 14, Anna, age 13, Abraham, age 10, and Simon, age 3.

Leopold remained in Trencin City until his death (25 April 1887, age 84 years). He taught Hebrew elementary school there for several decades and was a well-respected member of the Jewish community. He, his wife, and several of their children were all buried in the Trencin Jewish Cemetery (in the center, not far up the hill from the main gate). Their graves were visited in 1926 by American descendants, but had all been destroyed when other family members visited in March 2000.
