About RW Pvt. Samuel Wood
Samuel Wood's father, Samuel Wood died on July 12, 1750, at Middleboro, Massachusettes. Samuel, son of Samuel, was born at Middleboro, MA.,11 December 1750, His father made a provision in his will that if his unborn child was a boy, he would share an inheritance with a brother.
Revolutionary War Private Samuel Wood enlisted in the Continental Army April 19,1775, at Middleboro, MA. He served under his cousin, Captain Isaac Wood. He, his wife, Abiah (Peirce) Wood and children are named in pension roles, and listed in the DAR Patriot Index. He and his neighbors took arms in response to the alarm at Lexington, but arrived after the battle. Samuel served as a Pvt. in Colonel Cotton's Massachusetts Regiment for eight months, in his cousin Capt. Isaac Wood's Company, and was wounded in the hip. The wound left him lame for the rest of his life. Samuel was absent from duty while his wound healed. His enlistment expired while he was healing. He reenlisted and served in Colonels Lenard and Shepard's Massachusetts Regiment as a Pvt. in Captain Isaac Wood's Company until he was discharged in New York, January 1, 1777. Samuel's great nephew. Lemuel Wood and Lemuel's wife, Rebecca Wood (Tupper) are listed a page ahead of Samuel in the DAR Lineage book. Two uncles of Samuel's wife are also registered with DAR as Peirce, Abial, and Peirce, Henry. (Rebecca Tupper is said to have married a Samuel Wood, but it has been proven that she did not.)
Samuel Wood, (1750-1830) is named in Mayflower Families Silver Books as a descendant of Mayflower passengers: John Howland, Elizabeth Tilley, John Tilley, Joan, (Hurst) Tilley. There is as yet no Silver book for George Soule. However, Samuel Wood is in the Pink Book. Mayflower Families In Progress George Soule. John Howland is Samuel's 2 x great grandfather through Susannah Howland, daughter of Isaac Howland, youngest son of John Howland. Samuel's mother, Joanna Cobb, is listed as a descendant of George Soule, and Degory Priest. Samuel's wife, Abiah Peirce Wood is also a descendant of Henry Howland, brother of Mayflower passenger, John Howland.
Ira Wood, (son of Samuel Wood, 1750-1830) is mentioned as a descendant of John Howland and George Soule in Mayflower records. Samuel Wood removed to Prescott, MA.(then in the jurisdiction of Salem, MA; Prescott was not yet incorporated) with his sons Ira, Ruel and other members of his family prior to 1819. Ira bought property with a dwelling house at Prescott, (Salem) MA. Samuel signed the deed for his son, Ira Wood. Samuel Wood lived at lot 23. Ira bought lot No. 136,.between 1818-1819.
Before the town of Prescott was incorporated, Samuel and his family move to the area that was then in the jurisdiction of New Salem,, Massachusetts...Samuel purchased land for himself and wife, Abiah, and signed as a witness of a deed for his son, Ira. Wood . The family lived in the Swift River Valley. Samuel lived there for a wile, but moved to Shutesbury, where he died. some of the Wood family remained in Prescott So Samuel was burred there.. When Prescott and two other towns were flooded for the Quabbin Reservoir, Samuel, Abiah Wood and the remains of other towns members were moved. Samuel, Abiah's graves were moved to Quabbin., MA. Lillian Peirce wrote a book of, The History of Prescott, Massachusetts And Two Other Towns That Lived... The births, deaths, and mirages and where they lived were recorded from VR and maps. However, the author could not record them all, but there are members of several Mayflower descendants given..
