Rabbi Daniel Jeremy Silver

Rabbi Daniel Silver was born in 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio to Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver and his wife Virginia. He attended schools in Cleveland and graduated from Harvard University in 1948. He continued his studies at the University of Chicago receiving his Ph.D. in 1962.

He also served as a chaplain in the Navy. A respected scholar, he was the author of several books and articles including co-authoring a two volume history of Judaism with the late Bernard Martin of Case. He was adjunct professor of Religion at Case Western Reserve University from 1968 until 1986 as well as a senior fellow at Oxford Post Graduate Center for Hebrew Studies in England in 1979.

Rabbi Silver was associated with his father at the Temple, Tifereth Israel, since 1956, one of the largest and most influential Reform congregations in the country, succeeding him at his death in 1963. Father and son served as spiritual leaders for a combined total of 72 years at the Temple where the main sanctuary was dedicated to their honor for their years of service in 1990: The Abba Hillel Silver and Daniel Jeremy Silver Memorial Sanctuary. Rabbi Daniel Silver was a well-known scholar, teacher, author, and eloquent preacher and an important leader and participant in Jewish organizations as well as a social activist showing concern for all people.

Known as an innovator, Rabbi Daniel Silver revitalized the congregation at the Temple in University Circle and oversaw the building of the Religious School and Temple-Tifereth Israel East on Shaker Boulevard in Beachwood. His strong interest in religious education promoted schooling for the young people of the congregation and the introduction of traditions to encourage attendance at services. He engaged the first woman rabbi to serve in Cleveland. His legacy is a strong testimonial to the impact he made on the community and the country.

Rabbi Silver was an adjunct professor of religion at Case Western Reserve University from 1968 until 1986, when illness forced him to resign. He was a former president of the National Foundation for Jewish Culture and was the author of several books, including

Maimonidean Criticism and the Maimonidean Controversy, The History of Judaism Images of Moses. The Story of Scripture,

Rabbi Dr. Silver passed away 1989 and was survived by his wife, the former Adele Zeidman; two sons, Jonathan of Manhattan and Michael of Chicago; a daughter, Sarah Silver of Washington; and a brother, Raphael of Manhattan.
