Moshe Greenwald (1853–1910), also spelled Grunwald, was the Rav of Chust, Hungary and progenitor of the Puppa Hasidic dynasty through his five sons. He was also the author of Arugas Habosem, a book of responsa covering a wide breadth of halakhic issues.

He was the eldest son of Rabbi Amram Greenwald (1831–1870), one of the leading students of the Ksav Sofer. His father, not wanting to enter the rabbinate, married his wife on that condition.

Rabbi Moshe was one of a group of students of the Ksav Sofer who took on Hasidic customs. He was also a disciple of the second Belzer Rebbe, Rabbi Yehoshua Rokeach.

Greenwald began his rabbinic career as the Rav and av beis din in Humenné (Homonna in Hungarian), where he established a yeshiva.[2] From there he accepted the rabbanut of Kleinwardein, Kisvárda in Hungarian and in 1887 he moved to Chust, Huszt in Hungarian where he also headed a yeshiva. Among his favorite students in Chust were Rabbi Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz, the future founder of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath.

Greenwald eschewed pilpul but advised his students to acquire breadth and depth in the study of Torah and Gemara.

הרב משה גרינוולד (י"א בשבט תרי"ג, 1853 - ז' באב תר"ע, 12 באוגוסט 1910) היה מגדולי רבני הונגריה בסוף המאה ה-19. ידוע בחיבורו "ערוגת הבושם". נולד כבן בכור לרב עמרם גרינוולד (1831–1870) בעיר טשארנא בהונגריה. למד מגיל צעיר בישיבת הרב מנחם כ"ץ, מתלמידי החת"ם סופר בצהלים (כיום דויטשקרויץ Deutschkreutz באוסטריה), ואצל סבו הרב יוסף גרינוולד. מגיל 16 למד בישיבת פרשבורג אצל רבו המובהק‏‏ הכתב סופר, שם למד ביחד עם חברו הטוב הרב יוסף חיים זוננפלד, לימים רב העדה החרדית בירושלים. בגיל 20 התייתם מאביו, ועול פרנסת המשפחה נפל על שכמו, והוא נאלץ לעסוק במסחר עצים, אך בנוסף המשיך בלימודו בהתמדה עצומה. באותו זמן הוא נשא לאשה את קרובתו זיסל גסטטנר.

באותה תקופה החל לומר שעורי תורה בישיבה בעיר טשארנא, ובגיל 26 החל לשמש ברבנות הראשונה בחייו בעיר הומנא בהונגריה (היום בסלובקיה). בשנת תרמ"ז התמנה הרב גרינוולד לרבה של העיר קליינווארדין (קיש ווארדה) בהונגריה. הרב גרינוולד היה במקורו ממשפחה לא חסידית, הנוהגת כמנהגי החתם סופר, אולם מצעירותו הוא היה נוסע לאדמו"רים מבעלז וסיגט, ומאותה תקופה גם הקפיד בחבישת השטריימל, כמנהג החסידים. צאצאיו פתחו חצר חסידית חדשה, הנקראת חסידות פאפא, על שם העיר בה כיהן בנו כרב וכאדמו"ר.

בשנת תרנ"ג התמנה הרב גרינוולד לרבה של העיר חוסט בהונגריה (היום במערב אוקראינה). ברבנות העיר חוסט כיהנו רבים מגדולי רבני הונגריה ובראשם המהר"ם שיק. הרב גרינוולד החליף את הרב יואל צבי ראטה שנפטר באותה שנה. הרב גרינוולד הרחיב את ישיבת חוסט, שהפכה להיות לאחת מהישיבות הגדולות של יהדות הונגריה. רבים מרבני הונגריה במאה העשרים, היו מתלמידיו. לישיבתו הגיעו תלמידים גם מחוץ לגבולות הונגריה, ואף מארצות הברית.

כמו רבותיו המשיך הרב גרינוולד במלחמה כנגד התנועה הניאולוגית-רפורמית, ונגד כל סטייה מהמסורת של היהדות האורתודוקסית. בתשובותיו הוא מתייחס בחומרה לשינוי מקומו של החזן מעמוד החזן לבימה באמצע בית הכנסת. כמו כן הוא פוסק לבנו שיקפיד על גילוח שיער הבן בגיל שלוש ולא קודם לכן, בהתאם למסורת.

הרב גרינוולד היה מחבר פורה, אך עיקר פרסומו בא לו מספר השאלות ותשובות שכתב – "ערוגת הבושם". אחיו הוא הרב אליעזר דוד גרינוולד, בעל "קרן לדוד". אח נוסף היה רבי יעקב יחזקיה, חותנו של הרב יעקב יצחק ניימן.

:ילדיו הרב אברהם יוסף גרינוולד – כיהן כרב בקהילות מאקווא, חוסט ואונגוואר. נפטר בשנת תרפ"ח. בנו הוא הרב יהושע גרינוולד שכיהן כרב האחרון של קהילת חוסט, עד לגירוש הקהילה בשנת תש"ד לאושוויץ. בן אחר היה רבי מאיר אב"ד טעטש.

הרב יעקב יחזקיה גרינוולד – כיהן כרב וראש הישיבה בפאפא (Papa בהונגריה). מייסד חסידות פאפא, שמרכזה כיום בעיר ניו יורק. נפטר בשנת תש"א. בנו היה הרב יוסף גרינוולד, שמילא את מקום אביו ברבנות בפאפא ועמד בראש ישיבתה.

הרב יקותיאל יהודה גרינוולד, כיהן כרב בקהילת יארע. נפטר בשנת תרצ"ד. בנו היה רבי עמרם צבי דיין בוישווא ולאחר מלחמת העולם השניה בפרנוואלד ובויליאמסבורג

הרב לוי יצחק גרינוולד – כיהן כרב בקהילת אורשיווא ואחר כך רב בקהל ערוגת הבושם צעלים בניו יארק. נפטר בכ"ז בניסן תש"מ. כיום מכהן בקהל ערוגות הבושם בנו החורג רבי יוסף משה.

חתנו בזיווג ראשון הרב הלל מאיר ארנגרובר (בנו של הרב אלעזר מרדכי אב"ד ווראנוב).

חתנו הרב אהרן זילברשטיין (בן הרב דוד ישעיה זילברשטיין רבה של וויצן) אב"ד קרצקי-באלד. היה נשוי לבתו שרה יוכבד ולאחר פטירתה נישא לאחותה מירל חיה שהייתה נשואה בזיווג ראשון להרב הלל מאיד ארנגרובר).
