The Modzitz Hassidic dynasty started with Rebbe Yechezkel Taub of Kuzmir, (1755-1856), who established yeshivas and a type of Hasidic teaching that was similar to that of his rebbes, the Seer of Lublin and the Kozhnitser Magid, and distinct from the Hasidism of Kotzk.

The Modzitzer dynasty has its roots in Kuzmir and Zvolin. Reb Yechezkal of Kuzmir had at least one new niggun composed weekly for his shabbos table.

His son, the Zvoliner Rebbe, Reb Shmuel Eliyahu, was known as a musical wonder. When he davened for the amud in his father's beis midrash people were known to have said that they now experienced the meaning of "ve'chol ha'am ro'im es hakolos" "and the entire nation SAW the voices (a verse from the giving of the Torah)." Reb Shmuel's attitude toward negina was that the singer was standing in the Beis Hamikdash (the Holy Temple), and the Leviim were accompanying him.

His second son was Reb Yisroel, who began the dynasty of Modzitz.

Upon the death of Rebbe Yechezkel Taub of Kuzmir in 1856, his son, Rebbe Shmuel Eliyahu Taub of Zvolin, Poland, succeeded him. He excelled in Torah scholarship and creating Hasidic songs. He was called Menagen mafli pla'os Hebrew for "[a] wondrous musical talent". When he died in 1888, his first son Rabbi Moshe Aharon (1837 - March 17, 1918) succeeded him as Rebbe of Zvolin, while his second son, Rebbe Yisrael, went on to found the actual Modzitz Chasidic dynasty.

The Plonsk document informing about the birth of his son Israel-Chaim, claims Yechezkel was 42 years old then. i.e., he was born in 1787.

MODZITZ occupies a high place in the History of Chassidic musicology. What Chabad did for the philosophy of Chassidism, Modzitz did for its music. The Founder of the Dynasty was Rabbi EZEKIEL of KIJZMIR (KAZIMIERZ) 1806-56. He was born in Plonsk, son of Zvi Hirsch, one of the disciples of the Baal Shem Tov. בהמשך הספר מצוינים דבריו בעל פה של הרב א.י. ברומברג, כי יחזקאל נולד בפלונסק. ושנת לידתו:תקל"ד - 1774.

רבי יחזקאל טויב (טאוב) מקוז'מיר נולד בפלונסק תקל"ב, 1772 נפטר בקוז'מיר תרט"ז, 1856 בן 84 היה במותו. בנו של רבי צבי הירש "צדיק יסוד עולם, נזר ישראל" וחתנו של רבי משה מדוואהרט. נכנס בשערי החסידות בגיל צעיר מאוד והסתופף לידם של גדולי הדור: רבי יצחק הורוביץ,"החוזה מלובלין",רבי ישראל מקוזניץ,"היהודי הקדוש מפשיסחא. משבגר היה לחסידו הנבחר של רבי שמואל מקורוב וכשנפטר זה,קיבל את מרותו של רבי יצחק מוונגרוב. שניהם ראו ברבי יחזקאל ממשיך דרכם. מנהיגותו בחסידות והתרחבות עדת חסידיו, הביאה את פרנסי הקהילה לאלצו לעזוב. בתחילה עבר לעיירה שעננה שבמחוז ראדום ומשהתפרסם,עבר לעיירה קוז'מיר ועל שמה נקראו גם חסידיו.בין חסידיו התבלטו רבנים וחסידים ידועים שאחרי מותו התפזרו והקימו חצרות משלהם. הנהגתו היתה עממית והוא שם דגש מיוחד על הנגינה.אמר כי "אינני מרגיש עונג שבת מבלי ניגון מיוחד",ודגש זה היה למסורת קבועה אצל צאצאיו, צדיקי קוז'מיר,מודז'יץ,יאבלונה והמסתעף מהם.תורתו כפי שכתובה בספר :"נחמד מזהב",היתה הבסיס לדברי תורתו של נכדו רבי ישראל ממודז'יץ שקובצו בספר :"תורת יחזקאל". בניו: רבי דוד צבי,האדמו"ר מנוישטאט,רבי שמואל האדמו"ר מזוואלין,רבי חיים מקוז'מיר ורבי אפרים משעננה.
