Notes:

He is often confused with the Richard Berry who married Sarah Dorsey (The Dorsey Family) That 'Richard Berry' was born July 20, 1734 and was the son of Jerimiah Berry. That Richard Berry made his will August 26, 1818 and it was probated November 30, 1819 and left " to my son Richard Berry (now in Kentucky) and my three grandchildren, Michael R. Berry, Sarah G. Berry, and Sarah B. Offutt, $20.00 to be divided among them."

The Springfield Rotary Club had the building constructed with lumber from a century old building; the shop displays tools from the time of Thomas Lincoln. In 1942 the Kentucky General Assembly appropriated $4,800 to move the venerable Francis Berry house a distance of eight miles north of Springfield to the Lincoln Homestead Park. The Berry house is closely associated with the Lincoln family. Richard Berry, Sr. who built the house married Rachel Shipley whose sister Lucy Shipley gave birth to Nancy Hanks, the mother of Abraham Lincoln. [NO] According to legend, Nancy Hanks lived with the Berry family for a period of time. On June 12, 1806, Thomas Lincoln married Nancy Hanks in the Berry house. Nancy would later give birth to Abraham Lincoln who became the 16th president of the United States. The U.S. government built a fieldstone enclosure located on the park grounds honoring Nancy Hanks Lincoln.

Caution: No Abraham Lincoln Ancestry

James Hanks and his wife Lucy Shipley have in the past been believed to be the parents of Nancy Hanks, wife of Thomas Lincoln, and Abraham Lincoln's mother. DNA tests have now proven that such a relationship is impossible and Abraham Lincoln has no Shipley ancestry.

The Fall 2016 issue of American Ancestors confirms through mtDNA studies that Nancy Hanks' father remains unknown. The article specifically disproves the theory of Hanks' ancestry through the Shipley family, because Nancy's mtDNA carries the haplogroup X1c, while the sometimes-assumed Shipley ancestors carry an mtDNA haplogroup of H. Specifically, descendants of both Rachel Shipley, who married Richard Berry, and Naomi Shipley, who married Robert Mitchell, carry the H Haplogroup.
