About Sarah Shipley
Not the same as Sarah Dorsey
WHOEVER she was, she was not the daughter of Capt. Joshua Dorsey and Anne Ridgely, or of any other Dorsey in Harry Wright Newman's Anne Arundel Gentry. All Sarah and Rachel Dorseys are accounted for -
Robert Shipley Jr. was born in October of 1713 to Robert Shipley Sr. and Elizabeth Stevens. He was baptized on the 19th of October, 1713 in Howard County, Maryland. His name was entered into the Virginia Records of 1750, and it further stated that he owned 314 acres of land on Little Falling River. Robert Shipley was also a defendant in a lawsuit in Bedford County, Virginia in 1757, and he later moved to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in the year of his death, 1771.
Robert Shipley married ?? (NOT Sarah Dorsey)
This "reference" to a connection from this Robert Shipley to Lucy Hanks and President Lincoln has been proven to be conjecture, not fact: e.g.: [http://genforum.genealogy.com/shipley/messages/2782.html]

I'm not positive which Sarah DORSEY was wife of Robert SHIPLEY. Louis WARREN was not even positive that her name was DORSEY, but Robert SHIPLEY did have a wife Sarah. At Christ Church, Joshua DORSEY & Ann had a Sarah, b. 27 May 1733. Some people think this is the Sarah who was a second wife of Robert SHIPLEY.I've seen the original copy of the Christ Church record, so there definitely was one Robert SHIPLEY b. Oct. 1713, son of Robert, whose children are all recorded together at Christ Church. There was also a William HANKS, pew holder at Christ Church in 1736.
This is the probable family of Robert SHIPLEY, b. 1713:
- Robert SHIPLEY (ca. 1738 - ca. 1810), m. bef. 22 Aug.1777, VA, Rachel PREWITT.
- Edward, b. ca. 1740, in the Virginia Militia, 1758 [Virginia Militia, Lunenburg Co., VA, p. 68].
- Rachel (ca. 1744 - 1799) m. by 1770, Richard BERRY
- Ann (ca. 1746 - 1825) m. David McCORD
- Naomi (26 Apr. 1748, VA - 1790, killed near Crab Orchard, KY) m. 1768, NC, Robert MITCHELL, b. 22 Aug. 1747, VA.
- Mary, b.ca. 1750
- Margaret (ca. 1752 - 27 May 1829, Lincoln Co., KY, bu. Smith Cem., Belmont, NC) m. 1775, NC, Robert SLOAN, who d. in the Battle of Ramsaurs Mill, NC; m2. Matthew ARMSTRONG.
- George (by 1755, VA - 1819, KY) m. 1783, NC, Elizabeth McCORD
- Lucy (by 1765 - 1825)m1.[James?] HANKS; m2. 3 Apr. 1791, Mercer Co. KY, Henry SPARROW.
Caution: No Abraham Lincoln Ancestry
James Hanks and his wife Lucy Shipley have in the past been believed to be the parents of Nancy Hanks, wife of Thomas Lincoln, and Abraham Lincoln's mother. DNA tests have now proven that such a relationship is impossible and Abraham Lincoln has no Shipley ancestry.
The Fall 2016 issue of American Ancestors confirms through mtDNA studies that Nancy Hanks' father remains unknown. The article specifically disproves the theory of Hanks' ancestry through the Shipley family, because Nancy's mtDNA carries the haplogroup X1c, while the sometimes-assumed Shipley ancestors carry an mtDNA haplogroup of H. Specifically, descendants of both Rachel Shipley, who married Richard Berry, and Naomi Shipley, who married Robert Mitchell, carry the H Haplogroup.

10. The assertion that Abraham was first married to Mary Shipley was refuted by William E. Barton, The Lineage of Lincoln, 1929, pp. 71-73, 176, 178, 181-183.From pp. 71-72, regarding Robert and Mary Shipley of Lunenburg County, Virginia, and their alleged five daughters, "...these five daughters are not to be found in the Virginia records." Barton's final statement on the alleged Mary Shipley, page 182: "There is not a dot on an i nor the cross of a t in any contemporary record to show that Abraham Lincoln of Virginia had any other wife than Bathsheba. Mary Shipley Lincoln is a fictitious character."
