Ring is mentioned in the sagas as king in Ringsaker at the beginning of the 1000s. Snorre's royal sagas claim that he was the great-grandson of Harald Hårfagre , and thus a relative of both King Olav Tryggvason and King Olav Haraldsson .
The sagas tell that he was part of the association of five little kings around Lake Mjøsa who wanted to fight Olav Haraldsson. Rørek , the leader of the association, is said to have been Ring's brother. Olav Haraldsson and his men, however, surprised the kings at Ring's home, and they were taken prisoner.
Olav Haraldsson left Rørek blind, while Ring was sent out of the country. He is said to have settled in Sweden where he held a high position.
Snorre's royal sagas say that Ring's sister, Ragnhild, is said to have married the Swede Raud, and lived in Østerdalen . They became King Olav's friends, and their sons, Dag and Sigurd, joined Olav's hird.
When Knut the Mighty came to Norway in 1028, King Olav fled to Sweden and sought out Dag , the son of Ring. It is unclear whether Ring was still alive, but a verse composed by Olav's poet Tormod Kolbrunarskald mentions that Ring and Dag were leaders in the battle of Stiklestad in 1030. If this is Ring Dagsson, he must have either fallen in the battle or died shortly after. In that case, contrary to what is said about his brother Rørek, he must have reconciled with King Olav after his exile.
