About Rav Tsvi/Tzvi/Zvi Dov I Margulis, A.B.D. Pressburgh

  • Av Beis Din of Pressburgh,
  • Descendant of Rabeinu Mordechai Yoffe bal Halevushim (see Avnei Beis Hayotzer).
  • Acted as the Parness of Pressburgh.
  • In 1768 he signed on the Takones of Hagaon Moreinu MHR"M BRBY zt"l who was GAV"D of Pressburgh at the time.

The Lev Ha-Ivri R' Akiva Yosef Schlesinger (my paternal great grandfather R' Yukev Shmuel's brother) writes in the introduction to Bris Olam "And Meron Hachsam Sofer zy"a was my Mohel and personally b'chvodo gave me my first name after his father in law Rabeinu Akiva Eiger zt"l for that week the news of his demise reached him - and we are m'choter gezah / from the limb of the same stock as Rabeinu Akiva Eiger zt"l.

For we are m'yotzei chalotzov / descendants of The Mishnas De-Rebbe Akiva [Rebbe Akiva Eiger The First - DZ] who was the Rav in Pressburgh and my grandfather's [R' Tzvi Dov / Hersh Ber - DZ] grandfather Horav M"H Tzvi Dov [the first - DZ] lays next to him.

First he was a Parnass in Pressburgh, later he became the Rosh Beis Din there. Therefore our family name is Schlesinger, so too the family name of Hagaon R' Bunim Eiger zt"l Av Beis Din of Mattersdorf and his children is Schlesinger....The seder of the yichus is written in the introduction to Mishnas De-Rebbe Akiva. Hamaor Hagadol Hakatzin M"H Chaim Leib from Ungvar ztz"l passed on to me the seder hayichus precisely as he recieved it "ish mipi ish" for he too was from the same family.

The family Yafa from the family of "The Levush" that lays next to the Chasam Sofer is also from our family and were also called Family Schlesinger". [In the sefer Ilonei Yachas - Circa 2005 by Betzalel Berenstein, he notes that R' Tzi Dov Margulis the first's father R' Mechel Leib Margulis couldn't be a descendant of Reb Akiva Eiger The First because the years don't match, he was before R' A.E. the 1st. - have to explore from which ancestor we are descendants of R' A.E. the 1st - DZ] Eliezer Zeitlin

Note: The connection to R' Akivah Eiger must have been through one of his children's or grandchildren's wives - or perhaps his own wife. As we can see by R' Akivah Eiger II - sometimes family names were adopted from the mother's maiden name.

בתקל"ה הי' כבר דיין - כמו שרואים במכתבים המצורפים כאן

Bris Olam (see Photos tab): "When his boat sank, he became the Av Beis Din in his place" (this might mean literally that his boat sank, he lost a lot of money and then agreed to become an Av Beis Din in his place (i.e. in Pressburg).
