About Rav Yosef Yona Tzvi HaLevi Horowitz, AB"D Unsdorf and Frankfurt
Josef Jona Horovitz was rabbi to the Israelitische Religionsgesellschaft ("Religious Society of Israelites") from 1929 to 1938, succeeding Salomon Breuer. He was born in Hunsdorf, Czechoslovakia, and possessed great knowledge of the Talmud. In 1929 he was elected rabbi to the Israelitische Religionsgesellschaft, an office which had remained unfilled for three years. During this period the Society had been split by violent disagreement, with a minority trying to ensure the continuation of the HirschBreuer dynasty and elect the son of Salomon Breuer, the previous incumbent, to the rabbinacy, and the majority faction preventing this. In contrast to his predecessor, Horovitz was a relaxed, extrovert individual who strove to reconcile the conflicts between Jews. He remained in Frankfurt until the pogrom of November 1938. He regarded the persecutions as so dangerous that he suspended the commandment which forbids travelling on the Sabbath. This meant that strict Jews were able to use the railway on the Sabbath to flee to safety abroad. He was arrested and imprisoned by the police. Following his release, he emigrated to England at the end of November 1938 as a Czechoslovakian citizen. After spending some time in the USA, he settled in Israel at the start of the Sixties, and died there in 1970. He is buried in Jerusalem.

הרב מהריי״צ אב״ד הונסדארף, השם הזה נשאר לו אע״פ שהיה אח״כ כמה שנים אב״ד פראנקפורט־דמיין, כנראה משום שאבותיו שימשו בעיר ההיא ומשם חלקת מחוקקים הישיבה האדירה דהונסדארף, נולד בשנת תרנ״ב באונסדארף לאביו הרב הגדול והמקובל המפורסם, מוה״ר יהודה הורוויץ ע״ה, חתן הגאון האדיר ר׳ שמואל ראזענבערג זצ״ל אב״ד ור״מ אונסדארף. הוא נתגדל על ברכי זקנו מהר״ש הנ״ל, ולמד בישיבתו, שהיתה מקום תורה מפורסם למאות בחורי חמד. מד״ריי״צ הצטיין מאוד בכשרונותיו הברוכים במוחו החריף וזכרונו הבהיר, ויצא לו מיד שם כעילוי מפורסם. בשנת העשרים הושיבהו זקנו להיות מגיד שיעור בישיבתו. חותנו היה הגאון ר׳ ישעי׳ זילבערשטיץ זצ״ל אב״ד ווייצען.
אחרי פטירת זקנו עברה כל הישיבה והרבנות אל ידו ועל אף היותו אברך צעיר ניהל ברמה את הקהילה ואת הישיובה, ועד מהרת יצא לו שם :מפורסם בעולם הרבנים. על אף טרדותיו בישיבתו לא הניח ידו מעסקנות רבנית וצבורית, והי׳ ממנהיגי מרכז הרבנים הארצי והצטיין מאוד בדרשותיו הנלהבות למען אגו״י שהי׳ ממנהיגיה, ובפרט רבו דרשותיו בכל עת בחירת הפרלמנט והסינט הארצי, לחם מאוד לבחירת נציגים משל תאורטודוקסיא ולהרחיק הציונים והחפשים שראה בהנהגתם הפסד רב לתורת ולדת.
בשנת תרפ״ט נתקבל לאב״ד פראנקפורט דמיין׳ ומלך בקהלה האדירה ההיא עד ששרפו הנאצים ימ״ש את בהכ״נ בשנת תצר״ח, וברח לאנגליא.
בשנת תש״י בא לארה״ב ויסד ישיבה בבית קטן עם עשרה ילדים בבארא פארק. וזה הי׳ הת״ת הראשון במקום הזה כדרך כל הת״ת המקובלים בישראל. מוסדו הקטן הצליח מאוד ובזמן קצר נאלץ להגדיל ישיבתו. בעוד כמה שנים הכילה כשש מאות תלמיד ועם מתיבתא לבחורים מופלגים בתורה. עלה לארה״ק בדעתו ליסד קרית אונסדארף עם ישיבה ורבנות וכל המוסדות הציבוריים. את הרבנות דקהל באר שמואל והנהלת הישיבה מסר לבנו, הרב ר׳
