Son of George Douglas Troyer and Ara Belle Harbaugh, husband of Jennie May Teets, whom he married on September 4, 1912 in Big Creek, Michigan, and from whom he was later divorced on April 14, 1920 in Oscoda, Michigan, and father of William Douglas, Helen Irene, and Donald B. Troyer. Jennie later remarried to Arthur Buchanan.

Husband of Vera May Annis Brown, whom he married on March 30, 1924 in Colorado, and father of Lila, Ray Stephen Jr., Clara Belle, George Douglas, Robin Elmer, Norman Clifford, Clare May, Bruce, Gloria, R. Bruce and Doris Elaine Troyer (married Richard Albert Benincase).

In 1900, Ray F. Troyer, aged 7, was living in Newburgh, Cuyahoga, Ohio, in the home of his parents, George D. Troyer, aged 37, and Arra B. Troyer, aged 30, with siblings, Vernie A.
