About Reb Avraham Baruch Bursztyn, הי״ד

Avraham Baruch (1866-ca.1942) son or Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak, was one of 11 brothers and sisters. He began his studied in his hometown Ostrow-Mazowiecka, and then moved to more advanced studies in Warsaw. He was a favorite and valued student of Rabbi Haim Eliezer Wax (baal "Hanefesh Haya"). He married Chaya Ester Blum and moved to his wife's town of Rozhan where he endured pogroms (large-scale, targeted, and repeated anti-Jewish rioting), WWI, Russia-Poland war of 1920, and WWII.

In Rozhan he was a "talmid chacham" (rabbinical scholar). He turned down the proposal to serve as AB"D in Lomza, Poland, and refused any paid rabbinical appointment all his life, while his wife was the "bread provider" of the family - running a local pub/restaurant. The family lived on Warszavska Street in Rozhan. He served as Chair of "Hevra Kadisha" in Rozhan, and was a "Posek" and "Borer" for all Jews in the County. A member of the Alexander Rebbe ultra orthodox but tolerant "shtibl". Contrary to many of his circle, he did not oppose the youth Zionist organization and supported his youngest son, Yerachmiel Meir, in his quest to emigrate to Eretz Israel in 1934.

It is believed that almost the whole family was murdered together with 9,000 of Slonim's Jews in a single Nazi operation on 14 November 1941 or in the second mass murder of 8,000 Jews of Slonim in 1942 (or in Baranovicze).

During WWII, It is believed that Avraham Baruch son Benjamin Bursztyn and his family in Warsaw (except his youngest son Yitzhak) were deported to Majdanek Extermination Camp where they were murdered by the Nazis. Benjamin youngest son Yitzhak Bursztyn emigrated to Eretz Israel prior to WWII. Another version claims that Benjamin Bursztyn abandoned his family in Warsaw before the war and moved to the USSR where his whereabout is unknown.

Another survivor was the youngest son Yerachmiel Bursztyn who emigrated to Eretz Israel in 1934 and raised his family there.

Other survivors were the daughter Nechama Topola who was exiled (in 1941 - in WWII) with her three daughters to Kazakhstan in the Soviet Union, where she passed away in 1944. Her two sons also managed to survive the Holocaust as well. Nechama's two sons also survived the war, one in the USSR and one in Shanghai, China
Nechama's five children who survived the Holocaust and WWII, emigrated to the USA in 1945, settled down in the Hassidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, NY, and raised their families. By the end of the 20th century their number grew to ca 200 family members.

Hi Igal,
Enclosed please find birth registration of two brothers Bursztyn:
One is your grandfather Abraham Boruch (born 13 Aug 1866) and second is of Peisakh (born 2 Febr 1868).
Their father Icek Jankel ben Boruch brought them to register in Ostrow only 16 February 1873 due to his absence at the place of residence.
I found in these documents and added on Geni names of fathers of Icek Jankel - "Boruch" and of Tzipa - "Peisach".
So far I found after my research unfortunately only one sibling of your grandfather - "Peisakh".

Warmest regards,
Vladimir
