About Rep. Ulysses Freeman Doubleday
U.S. Congressman. He established and edited the Saratoga Courier, (1816-18), the Cayuga Patriot, (1818-19) and the Gospel Advocate, (1828-31). In 1831, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-second Congress, serving until 1833. After his term he was appointed inspector of Auburn Prison in 1834 and was again elected to the Twenty-fourth Congress, serving (1835-37). Leaving politics, he engaged in agricultural pursuits in Scipio, New York, (1837-1846), then moved to New York City, where he was the in mercantile business, until he retired in 1860.

The Cayuga Patriot was started at Auburn by Samuel R. Brown in 1814. Isaac S. Allen, Ulysses F. Doubleday, and others, were afterward interested in its publication. In June, 1847, it was united with the Tocsin, the joint papers taking the name of The Cayuga New Era. It was successively published by Merrill, Stone & Co., Stone, Hawes & Co., Finn & Hallett, and William L. Finn, and was discontinued in 1857.

This index is entitled "Cayuga Patriot Gleanings," from a book of abstracts from the "Cayuga Patriot," Auburn, N.Y., a weekly newspaper from dates January 8, 1840 to March 3, 1847, scattered issues. The holdings are in bound vols in the Seymour Library, History Room, Auburn, N.Y. and it was abstracted mainly according to items of Genealogical interest in the Cayuga Co. & Auburn, N.Y. area. However it does contain items of world note at times. As you will see there are cross-references according to names & other items of historical interest. This newspaper was published at different times by Ulysses F. DOUBLEDAY (the father of Abner Doubleday) in Auburn, he owned it from 1819 to 1827, then bought back in, after coming back following his serving as a Congressman, (among other pursuits) in 1843, selling in 1846 to move westward, he died in Bloomington, Illinois, 11 March 1866 and is buried there.
