Revolutionary War Record

Reuben Hale Jr. fought in the 1st Connecticut, 7th Regiment, Huntington's Brigade under Capt. Titus Watson.

Reuben Hale, Jr. is recorded in Capt. Titus Watson's Company, in Col. Heman Swift's Regiment in the Sept. 1777 payroll for soldiers as a private. Some of his fellow soldiers are Isaac Higby. Jonas Hubbard, Eleazar Knapp, Elijah Knapp, Abram Knapp, Benajah Leonard, Isaac "Miles" and Caleb "Miles" and Ebenezer Hall. He is recorded again March 5, 1778 in the roll of Col. Heman Swift's Regiment. Swift's Connecticut regiment fought at the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth.

He is recorded many times in muster rolls until April 1780. On June 1782 he is again recorded in a muster roll of Col. Swift and Capt. Stephen Billings, along with Joseph Rogers, Joshua Taylor, Thomas Hall, Job Hawkins, Richard Mack, Charles Brown, Benjamin Taylor, Samuel Nichols, Joshua Northrup, David Beebe, Leander and Swift Chamberlain, Gabriel Valentine and had been inspected by Maj. Gen. Steuben. Col. Heman Swift's regiment seems much reduced by this time; Reuben has been serving for 3 years and is age 18 (if his birth record is correct). This seems to explain why he served so long but remained a private due to his young age. Others soldiers serving in his company: David Hall, Benjamin Wright, David Bishop, Timothy Knapp, James Miles, Robin Starr and Josiah Smith are also mentioned. Capt. Watson is not mentioned. Reuben is continuously mentioned in muster rolls until 1783 when the final muster roll is taken stating years of service. His final Muster Roll of 1783 under Capt. Ephraim Kimberley, and Lt. Isaiah Tiffany includes Reuben, David Parsons, Thomas Hall, Roswell Lamphere, Maj. M. Barber, David Beebe, David Rowe, Herman Rogers, Samuel Nichols (among many others). He is on furlough in 1789.

Other soldiers he fought with are James Sanford, Philetus Swift, Daniel Averill, William Larabee, Asa Hyde, Edwin Goodyear, Jonas Hubbart (Hubbard), Swift Chamberlain, Abijah Beardsley, Liffe Sanford, Henry Dagget, Charles McDonald, Davis Beebe, Gad Asher.

His final confirmation of service record says he was enlisted from 1775-1783, which means he enlisted at age 15. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9WB-ZQ9N?i=197&cc=206...

Enlisted at: BARKHAMSTED, LITCHFIELD CO . CT.

Marriages

DAR records state:

'''Wife #1:''' Esther Mallory (this appears to be correct as her last child is stated as born in 1801). Her children with Reuben were Orpah, Tamar, Clarissa, Eugene, and Levi.

According to LDS records his first wife was Martha Higby and second wife was Esther Mallory. This is incorrect. He married Esther Mallory married August 25, 1784 in Southbury, CT, USA (the year after the final muster roll).

Esther Mallory was born 1762 , last child 1801, New Hartford, Litchfield, Ct. She has no recorded death date, however she may have died shortly after the birth of Tamar in 1801.Two different accounts of the sequence of marriages for Reuben appear, but the DAR record appears to be correct as it correlates with the births of the children of Reuben and Esther Mallery.

Reuben is noted as head of house at New Hartford, Litchfield, CT on the 1800 census.

'''Wife #2''': Martha '''Higbee'''.or Higby. .

Children with Martha Higbee:
Isaac b. 1802 (possible son)
Walton (born 1810) also written incorrectly as Walter in the VanBenschouten genealogy
William (b. 1806)
*John, born 1809 (possible son) died Feb. 28, 1839. FAG #112687083. m. Wealthy A. Stebbins.
Migration to New York State: "

In 1771, Reuben Hale Sr. purchased the John Whitney lot of one hundred fourteen acres at Hartland, CT on which was a small house. [52]. The land records of Hartland show that he bought and sold throughout the years until a final transaction between him and his, son Reuben Jr. in March, 1788, in which land, a dwelling house and a shop figure. [53] From, this it is inferred that he was some sort of a mechanic. Soon after, this property was conveyed to Amasa Bushnell, and the entire family moved, away, locating finally in New York State. While living in Hartland, both Reuben Hale,.sen., and Reuben Hale, jr., enlisted in the Revolutionary Army, the older man serving under Captain Kimbirly, and the younger one giving over six years services under various officers (Heman Swift, Cpt. Kimberley) for which pension was allowed in August, 1819. [54]

It would make sense that until April 6, 1801, he was living in New Hartford Township, Litchfield, CT, where daughter his youngest daughter Tamar is born. Esther may have died after childbirth with Tamar.

However, a Reuben Hale is found living in 1800 in Whitestown, Oneida, New York. He matches the age of Reuben Jr. and others in the household match the age of Martha Higbee. There are 2 male children under 10 (perhaps Levi and Isaac b.1802 , and two female children under 10 (perhaps Clarissa and Tamar).

Again in 1800, a Reuben Hale is found living in Granville, Washington County, New York, next to a Samuel Hale. He is the right age for Reuben and has what could be one of his daughters and his mother living with him. Some men he fought with in the Revolution are living here at this time.

He also may have lived at Otego, Oswego, New York, and Milford, PA before 1810.

In 1820 he is still living in Franklin, Delaware New York.

He died in 1828 in Franklin, Delaware, New York.

The town of Franklin lies in the northern part of Delaware County.Ouleout Creek, which flows into the Susquehanna River, is the main surface water feature. The waterway was important to village development, not only for water supply but as transportation arteries for travel as well as shipment of lumber and goods to market. The village of Franklin was platted in 1827 by John Edgerton, who had bought 100 acres (40 ha) for the site. Accompanied by the French Lyons descendants It was incorporated in 1836.
