  • In 1908, Reuben ("Ruby") played as a child prodigy violinist at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan, New York.
  • Starting in the early 1920s, Ruby and his jazz string orchestra orchestra played at junior proms at Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, the University of Pennsylvania, and other colleges and universities. During the weekends on Long Island, the Carl Fenton Orchestra played for parties held at William K. Vanderbilt's "Eagle's Nest," his Spanish-Revival style mansion and 43-acre estate at Northport Bay, on the "Gold Coast" of northern Long Island, Suffolk County, New York.
  • The original person to use the stage name of "Carl Fenton" was Walter Gustave Haenschen (1889-1980). Haenschen selected the name surname of "Fenton" from Fenton, Missouri. It is speculated that a staff member at Brunswick Records chose "Carl" as Haenschen's given stage name.
  • Throughout the early- to mid-1920s, Haenschen led the band while it was in the studio at Brunswick Records. When the band played outside the studio at occasional concerts, it was led by Ruby.
  • By mid-1927, when Haenschen left Brunswick Records, Ruby purchased the rights to use the name "Carl Fenton". From 1928-1930, Ruby was the musical director at Gannett Records. Under Ruby's leadership, the Carl Fenton Orchestra became a radio-based organization.
  • In 1930-1932, the Carl Fenton Orchestra co-starred with the up & coming singer Bing Crosby at the CBS network. When the orchestra went on tour, it used another name: "The Cremo Orchestra," after its sponsor, Cremo Cigars.
  • By the mid-1930s, the Carl Fenton Orchestra was the house orchestra for WMCA in Manhattan. By that time Ruby had legally changed his own name to Carl Fenton (on 16 June 1932).
