About Reuben Winslow Whipple, Sr
Genealogy of the Whipple, Paddock, and Bull Families in America 1620-1970 by Ruth Kapphahn & James Grafton Carter says: "Reuben Whipple was born in Rhode Island in 1770 and there married Alice Sprague. He migrated to New York, settling near Cooperstown, apparently sometime between 1810-1820, as he is seen on the 1810 census in Providence, RI, & on the 1820 census of Otsego, New York, with his son, Reuben Jencks Whipple. He and Alice with a son and daughter were among the first members of Fitch Hill Methodist & Episcopal Church in 1813, in the town of Otsego, New York. They died within five days of each other in 1842. He was a farmer. The history of the Fitch Hill Methodist church shows first members as Reuben & his wife Ellis Sprague & her brother, Jonah & his wife Esther Bates Sprague. Their sons Col Hezekiah Sprague & Dr Jencks Smith Sprague are long time residents of the county, & one of their homes is preserved for tours.
