About Rev. Aaron Whitney

Rev Aaron Whitney ..... Birth: Mar. 14, 1714 Littleton Middlesex County Massachusetts, USA Death: Sep. 8, 1779 Petersham Worcester County Massachusetts, USA

Son of Moses and Elizabeth Whitney, he was ordained the first minister of Petersham church in Dec., 1738. He was an uncompromising Tory. His congregation could not accept his beliefs and in 1774, he was dismissed from his parish, but refused to accept his dismissal. The town voted to have Peter Gore, who was half Indian, to stand at the meeting house (where church was held) door to prevent Rev. Whitney from entering. As a result, he held church at his home and preached to sympathizers of his cause. He claimed to be the minister of the town up to the time of his death in 1779.

He married (1) Alice Baker of Phillipston on July 12, 1739, and (2) Mrs. Ruth (Hubbard) Stearns, daughter of Jonathan Hubbard, of Lunenberg, and widow of Rev. David Stearns, on Nov. 6, 1768.
