About Rev. Abraham Meyer

Rev. Abraham Meyer became affiliated with the United Brethren Church in the early days of that denomination, as early as 1796. He was a preacher, an organizer of new churches and a recognized leader. The Meyer home was headquarters for the United Brethren perople in the Carlisle area and many services were held in the home.

Buried in the family graveyard on the farm which he owned. About 4 miles west of Carlisle on the road leading from Carlisle to Newville was the family farm. Two stones remain in this cemetery but only one can be read in its entirety. His stone reads:

In Memory of

Abraham Meyer

Preacher of the Gospel

Who departed this life

Oct 28 1826 Age 68 years

and 5 months.

The second stone was erected for Christine Meyer (she was born from a second marriage) but only the name is readable.

The will of Rev. Meyer was probated in November of 1826. In that document Christine and Sophie, both unmarried, were each to receive $2000 and Elizabeth was to be given $800. John was to receive on-half of the home plantation and Mary and Susanna were to receive the other half. Abraham, Jr was not mentioned in the will but he had acquired a farm prior to his father's death, this purchase made with his father's assistance. Benjamin was given one-half of a plantation, evidently a second farm owned by Rev. Meyer. Included in that property were a grist mill, a saw mill and a still house. Barbara was given the other half of that property.
