Son of Alexius Hagan and Susanna Gwynn Hagan, daughter of Thomas Gwynn.
He attended St Thomas Seminary in Nelson County, Kentucky. As well as St. Joseph Seminary in Bardstown. He was ordained in 1840.
The young priest was immediately appointed to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uniontown, Union County, Kentucky. Alfred assisted Rev. Elisha J. Durbin in care of several missions which included Henshaw, Union County, Kentucky. and Fancy Farm in Graves County, Kentucky.
In the spring of 1843, Rev. Hagan moved to Fancy Farm and became the first resident pastor at Saint Jerome Catholic Church, in Graves County.
He also had charge of Saint John the Evangelist Church in McCracken County, Kentucky.
In October of 1846 Alfred contracted Malaria at St Jerome Catholic Church, Fancy Farm, Graves County, Kentucky.
He passed on 29 November 1846. He was laid to rest at St. Jerome Cemetery.
There is no headstone or memorial marker.
