The Rev. Daniel Humphreys, pastor of the First Congregational Church for fifty years, and his distinguished wife, Sarah Riggs Humphreys, died within a few days of each other in 1787. One of their sons, Major Elijah Humphreys, married Anna, the daughter of Rector Mansfield, a most remarkable romance in those days. The youngest son, David Humphreys, was probably the most distinguished man born in Derby.

Rev. Humphreys, who graduated at Yale College, 1732, and was ordained as a minister of the gospel at Derby 1733, where for more than half a century he was pastor of the same organization. From the records he left of his ministry, he was a faithful and earnest preacher of the gospel. He was a fine scholar, a great reader, and loved the study of theology.

General David Humphreys House Directly across from the Old Episcopal Graveyard stands the General David Humphreys' House the most historically important structure in the Historic District. built in the early 1700's, it was later the home of the Reverend Daniel Humphreys and his wife Sara Riggs Humphreys. It was here on July 10, 1752, that David Humphreys was born.

John Humphreys House This house was built by Rev. Daniel Humphreys for his son John in 1775. It is part of the Ansonia Historic District.
