Rev. David Sutton b. 31 July 1703 in Bernard Township, Basking Ridge, New Jersey, m. 1st ca 1723 Elizabeth Cox of Somerset County, NJ. In the records of the Baptist Church of Middletown, NJ.: “March ye 1st 1731-2: A list of names of the Church members in the County of Monmouth & places adjacent in East New Jersey. June 1733, David Sutton, Elizabeth Sutton.” Evidently she died soon after as on 2 June 1735, the name of David’s 2nd wife, Sarah, is added to the church rolls. She was Sarah Trembley. He d. in Basking Ridge, Bernard Township, Somerset County, NJ between the date on his will, 1 Dec 1775, and the date of probate of the will, 19 Dec 1775. HANNAH COZAD, along with her husband JOHN COLLINS, witnessed the will of her grandfather David Sutton in 1775. The text of the will has many misspellings including the names of the heirs. Hannah is spelled Jeonner, when David directs that the three youngest daughters of his deceased daughter Elizabeth receive five pounds each, The signature is clearly HANNAH COLLINS.

I found a very old pamphlet called "Genealogical Record of Mercer, Sutton and Cox Heirs to Their Ancestors' Estate" compiled by James V. Snyder, Harvey, ILL.This pamphlet is falling apart.Sometimes it repeats itself and is sometimes confusing but thought some of you might need this information. Sir Geo. Crateret who married Lady Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of Charles I. (Stewart) and Henrietta Marie daughter of Henry IV of France and Marie Medici of Florence. Sir George and his wife had extensive territories given them by her brother, James Duke of York, (after James II) which were ceded to him by his brother Charles II., fully one-half of New Jersey, N.E. portion belonging to Carteret's wife. After Sir Georg's death she married William Larwence.Carteret had a daughter Elizabeth who married Marquis Geo. Trembly an aristocratic French Huguenot, and had a daughter Johana who married Philip Cox as second wife 1729.He was born 1681 son of Isaac Cox. There were two daughters of Berkley (think this is William Berkley son of William Berkley, Royal Gov of VA from 1646-1651).Sarah Berkley married 1st a Sutton, no issue.married 2nd Sir Isaac Cox brother of Dr. Daniel Cox 1660, (Isaac born about 1650) son of Philip Cox, &c,&c. Elizabeth married Marquis Geo. Trembley and had daughter Hannah who married Philip Cox, Son of Isaac and Sarah who married a Sutton died, no issue.Then married Rev David Sutton, a famous Baptist minister by whom there were seven or eight sons and three daughters. Isaac Cox had sons-Daniel, John and Philip.John died by accidental poisoning, no issue.Philip cox married Hannah Trembly, daughter of first wife by Trembly, 1730, the only heir of Peter Noe and her mother Mary, a daughter of Geo. Carteret.Philip made a will, and Anthony Cozant (someone has written over the last part to spell this name cozad), his nephew, was his executor.Hannah also made a will. Isaac Cox, born about 1650-5 married Mary Trembly; married second time Martha Graves, daughter of a wealthy French Sea Captain, who was his only heir. HAD CHILDREN. 1st Nancy Cox married Jacob Cozant(d), oldest son of Marquis Anthony Cozant (d)(I do not see any other numbers to follow for other children after the 1st Nancy Cox) Richard Townley, 8th son and last child of Nicholas Townley of Littleton place, London, England, died June 3rd, 1687, aged 75 years.Born 1612.He married a sister of Dr. Daniel Cox and Isaac Cox, large land owners in New Jersey and Maryland.Married also a widow of Carteret. John Cox had seven children, Harriet two children. Carrie E. Cox and Robert C. Cox Margaret Mercer daughter of Edward Mercer, son of Gideon Mercer married Thomas Cox. Elizabeth Sutton (nee Cox) was the wife of the reverend David Sutton.
