Guiliaem (our subject) came from Sluis, Holland in 1683 to America with his wife and his first three little daughters—Sara, Maria and Elizabeth. He came in the capacity of catechiser voorleser and school master as he had studied theology in Middleburgh, Holland.
He settled in Harlem in 1683 and was the Town Clerk and reader in 1690. He then moved to Passaic and again moved to Hackensack where he purchased land from John Berry. His farm was located at what is now the lower part of Hackensack.

He married Martyntie Hendrickse Vermeulen April, 15, 1676 in Sluis, Province of Zeeland, The Netherlands daughter of Hendrick Vermeulen. The posted article is incorrect as to her father's name. Her middle name indicates that her father was Hendrick Vermeulen.
It is said that the prayer meetings held with his son Hendrick, family and other settlers in Pompton, New Jersey were the beginnings of the organized church which actually took place April 7, 1736.

September 16, 1693 he was asked to return to Vlissingen (Flushing) in The Netherlands to the Classis for Ordination to be ordained for ministry.

After which he returned to Hackensack February 24, 1694 and assumed charge of the old "Church on the Green" and remained pastor of that church until 1724. He was the first regularly ordained and established clergyman in the Province of New Jersey for 15 years. In 1717 his salary was 50 pounds per annum.

He died a few years later and tradition says he was buried under the pulpit of the old church.¡

Rev. Guilliam Bertholf was a founder of New Jersey.¡¡

So far as records show they had issue:
1 Sara bp at 1677 at Sluis Netherlands married David Demarest
2 Maria bp 1680 at Sluis, Netherlands who married Jan Bogert
3. Elizabeth bp 1683 bp at Sluis, Netherlands who married Albertse Terhuyne
4 Hendrick bp 1686 April 6, 1686 at Bergen, New Jersey who married Marrietje Terhuyne
5 Quirinus bp 1688 New York City who married Annette Ryerson
6 Martha bp 1692 at Bergen New Jersey who married Albert Bogert
7 Annatja bp 1698 at Hackensack, New Jersey 'who married Abraham Varick
8 Jacobus b about 1700 and listed as the "youngest son" who married Elizabeth Van Emburgh
Of note is the Bertholf Family Monument at Pompton Lakes Cemetery.

Another daughter Catrina appears to be the 9th child.

Upon his return with the English take over of the Dutch , Guiliaem acquired land at Pompton by a grant from the English Crown. In 1697 a small stone structure was built on the land which was situated between the Ramapo River above the Pompton Falls and the Wanaque River near the farm of Garrit Harmanus Van Wagoner and Annetje Sip. Their daughter Annetje Van Wagoner married Captain Arent Schuyler Jr. it is felt that those two farms were on the West Bank of the Ramapo about 1695 were not the residence of the families but were occupied by the next generation during the Revolutionary War and were the site of military encampments .

It has been said "The descendants of Dominie Bertholf's 8 children can be proud of their heritage and their ancestor who was in his day 'the itinerant apostle of New Jersey."

A search for the other memorials of the children should be made.
