About Rev. James Hooper Colton, (CSA)

Rev. James Hooper Colton

Rev. James Hooper Colton, son of Rev. Simeon W. and Susan Colton (Chapman), was was born on 22 March 1834 in Amherst, Hampshire County, Massachusetts and died on 14 February 1893 in Burkesville, Cumberland County, Kentucky at age 58.

General Notes: 1. Qt. Geo. Colton & Desc; #872 (Florence I. W. Burgess). He graduated with honors from University of North Carolina in 1855; served the Confederacy during the Civil War, being commissioned as a Chaplain of the 53rd Regt., NC troops. After the battle of Gettysburg, by permission of Federal Officers, he remained behind with the wounded within the Union lines for 3 months. He was exchanged and rejoined his Regiment and stayed with them until the close of the Civil War.

For 4 years he was a Professor of Latin and Mathematics at Fayetteville Female High School in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina and was licensed to preach by the Fayetteville Presbury on 17 April 1861 at Lumberton, Robeson County, North Carolina. In 1870 he went as a missionary to the Choctaw Indian Nation, OK; returning to NC in 1877 in poor health. During the next 3 or 4 years he served as a Minister in the states of NC, SC and GA.

In Apr 1892 he leased the Alexander College in Burkesville, Cumberland County, Kentucky and remained there until his death a year later.

4. Hooper & the Hooper family, who were active at the U. of NC. They had also donated to Rev. Simeon Colton, Rev. James H. Colton's father.

James married Emily Guthrie, daughter of John S. Guthrie and Unknown, on 20 Jul 1857 in Chatham County, NC. Emily was born about 1837 in Chatham County, NC and died on 7 Aug 1859 about age 22.

James next married Harriet Eloise Avery on 20 Oct 1870 in Morgantown, Burke County, NC. Harriet was born on 5 Apr 1846 in Morgantown, Burke County, NC and died on 19 Oct 1903 in Burkesville, Cumberland County, KY at age 57.

i. Molton Avery COLTON was born on 23 Oct 1871 in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, OK. Molton married Andree ?.
ii. Elizabeth Avery COLTON was born on 30 Dec 1872 in Choctaw Nation, Durant, Byran County, OK and died on 25 Aug 1924 in Clifton Springs, NY at age 51.
iii. James Hooper COLTON Jr. was born on 30 Jan 1875 in Magnolia Place, Duplin County, NC and died in May 1964 in NV at age 89. James married ? ?.
iv. Susan Avery COLTON was born on 10 Feb 1878 in Magnolia Place, Duplin County, NC.
v. Henry Elliott COLTON was born on 9 Dec 1879 in Hawthorne, Burke County, NC and died on 5 Mar 1945 in Nashville, Davidson Co., TN at age 65. Henry married Elizabeth Williams Overton. Elizabeth was born on 14 Jun 1893 and died on 29 Dec 1968 at age 75.

        vi.  Clara Avery COLTON was born on 16 Sep 1881 in Swan Pond, Burke County, NC.

vii. Willoughby Francis COLTON was born on 29 Aug 1883 in Line Creek, Burke Co., NC.
viii. Maj. Gen. Roger Baldwin COLTON (born on 15 Dec 1886 in Jonesboro, Burke Co., NC - died on 24 Jan 1978 in Fairfax, Fairfax Co., VA). Roger married Ora Vaulx Carter on 20 Oct 1917. Ora was born on 13 Oct 1891, died on 2 Jan 1992 at age 100, and was buried in Arlington Nat. Cem., Arlington, VA.

Oct. 20, 1870, at Morganton, the Rev. James Hooper Colton, s. of Simeon and Susan (Chapman) Colton. He was b. March 22, 1834, at Amherst, Mass. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and of the Columbia (S. C.) Theological Seminary; a Presbyterian minister; chaplain in the Confederate army. He d. Feb. 14, 1893, at Burksville, Ky.; she d. Oct. 19, 1903, at Campbellsville, Ky.
