About Rev. James Pratt Hamlin
Hamlin was born in England in 1803 and trained as a flax dresser and weaver. Hamlin and his wife Elizabeth arrived at the Bay of Islands in 1826 with William Williams. He served as a lay teacher for the Church Missionary Society in Waimate and later Kerikeri. In 1834 he travelled with Archdeacon Brown on an exploration of the Waikato. In 1836 he was placed in charge of two stations at Manukau, with headquarters at Awhitu. After Hamlin's ordination as a deacon in 1844 he was sent to Wairoa in Hawke's Bay. In 1863 he was ordained a priest in the Church of England. In 1864, after his brother Job was killed by King movement supporters, he returned to Auckland, where he died on 15 November 1865.
