Rev John Welborn, Jr

The inscription of Rev. John Welborn Jr ‘s grave stone : He was a member of the M. P. Church. In July 1828, he was one of 9 trustees of Fair Grove Methodist Church. Along with Alson Gray (1799 – 1881), he was also a preacher in addition to being a church trustee. It is unknown whether or not these two men actually organized this church, but it is believed that they were two of the several people to begin the movement. Rev. Welborn lived in nearby Randolph County where he raised his family. By the end of his life, he had traveled throughout the state, having migrated with several church preaching circuits. He died on Dec 15, 1830 and is buried in Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery, in Thomasville, NC. His first wife, Mary Parsons died in 1818. John and Mary had nine children. His second wife Priscilla Wood Welborn (1803 – 1885) is buried in Hopewell Cemetery, Trinity, NC. They had five children. After the death of John Welborn, Priscilla remarried (?) and had two twin sons. They kept the last name of Welborn.

Children of Priscilla Welborn with her second husband Lamma Welborn (12/1/1836 – 6/26/1862) 1st Lt in the 4th NC Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in the Battle of King’s Schoolhouse, Oak Grove, VA and later died of a “fever” in the Richmond Military Hospital, 6/26/1862. He is buried in Hopewell Cemetery, near Hopewell Methodist Church in NC, next to his mother Priscilla Wood Welborn and near his twin brother.

Calvin H. Welborn (12/1/1836 - ) He was promoted to 2nd Lt. in 22nd NC Infantry Regiment 8/1/1863. During the battle at Petersburg, VA (1/28/1865), he was taken prisoner and was paroled to Robert E. Lee at the end of the Civil War (4/9/1865).
