About Rev. Jonas Posey Moon, I

Jonas Moon died 27 April 1849 in Hamilton County, Tennessee. An obituary appeared in the "Tennessee Baptist" of 28 June 1849, which reads:

"Hamilton Co., May 10, '49. Died on the 27th of April last, Rev. Jonas Moon, being seventy-one years nine months and nine days old. He professed religion about the twenty first or second year of his age. He in the early part of his life lived in several counties in this State, after that in Roane county, in the Hiwassee purchase, but removed to Hamilton county, sometime over twelve years ago, in the 10th district of the same, where he died. He had been a witness to the truth of revelation about 50 years, 45 years or more he had been preaching among Baptists. As respects his conduct, he seems to have shut the mouths of youngsters, for there was never a charge of immoral conduct at the bat of the church where he lived, in the whole course of his life. He testified in the last of his life that he had finished his master's work, assigned him to do, and that he was ready to go, and with this kind of confidence, seemed to bid farewell to the world. May we and his relations be prepared to meet him in that far Canaan of delight to where we have no doubt he is gone."

Jonas Moon was buried in the Francisco Family Cemetery in Bradley County, Tennessee. His tombstone, which survives, records incorrectly both his dates of birth and death as 18 May 1777 and 27 February 1849.

Lydia Moon, widow of Jonas, was born 9 August 1780 in Virginia. She survived her husband and appears in the 1850 Hamilton County census, aged 69 years. She died on 20 May 1855 and was buried beside her husband in the Francisco Family Cemetery.

Jonas & Lydia were the parents of at least 10 children who lived to adulthood. They are the progenitors of most of the Moons in the Hamilton Co. area.

"Lydia could not be d/o John Burke and Euphemia Bodine. She was a year older than Euphemia. It is believed that Lydia was (indeed) the d/o James Bodine and therefore the sister of Euphemia Bodine."
