He married Sarah Athearn, daughter of daughter of Simon Athearn (ca 1643-20 Feb 1714/5) & Mary Butler. She was b. Jan 1, 1676 and d. Mar 1, 1745 at Tisbury.

Rev. Josiah Torrey, although born in Boston lived and died at Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard, Mass.He graduated from Harvard College in 1698, was ordained in 1701 and from that time until his death he was pastor of the church at Tisbury in which office he was succeeded by his son-in-law Rev. Nathaniel Hancock who married Josiah's daughter Sarah.The church records during his pastorate and that of his sucessor are lost or destroyed but we can secure some information from the gravestone inscriptions.Those of the Rev. Josiah and his wife reads as follows: --'Rev. Josiah Torrey, husb. Sarah d. Dec -- 1723 in the 42d year.' 'Sarah wife of Rev. Josiah d. Mar 1, 1745, ae. 68..'The Diary of Rev. William Holmes of Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, 1689-1746 records that 'October 8, 1723 Mrs Bacon died on Thursday last and Mr. Torrey on Saturday Morning.He was buryed on the evening of ye Lord's day.He was pastor of the church of Tisbury and had been preacher about twenty years and died in the 43rd year of his age.'The distribution of his estate to his four daughters was made Oct. 28, 1745, at which time his daughter Susanna was alive and unmarried."

Josiah Torrey, 1680-1723, minister of the Second Meeting House at Tisbury. The committee charged in June 1703 with the duty of procuring "an orthodox minister" secured this 1698 Harvard Graduate whom they recommended "as a suitable person for settlement as their pastor" (Banks, HMV II.West Tisbury.79).
