Rev. Prescott Evarts

PRESCOTT EVARTS RECTOR EMERITUS OF CHRIST CHURCH

His Resignation Accepted at Special Parish Meeting Resolutions Adopted Commending His Leadership in Growth of Parish, His Diocesan Activities and Generosity Rev. Prescott Evarts was elected rector emeritus of Christ church at a special parish meeting held May 15 at which time his resignation, to be effective October 30. was accepted.

After a brief outline of the life of Rev. Mr. Evarts, the resolutions pay tribute to the progressive measures in parochial and diocesan activities, in the adoption of which he took a leading part. He speaks of his presidency of the Clerical Club and of his social service work in this city. It tells bow the funds of the parish have increased under his pastorate and of the vast increase in contributions to missions, including Near 381 Relief and the church pension fund.

To his leadership is attributed a model accounting system for the parish and increase in invested funds. He is commended for having established in the church one of the first missionary councils of the parish and especial comment is given to his excellent work in the reorganization of the Sunday school and for the inception of the Sir Galahad Club. As a conspicuous monument to him is mentioned the establishment of St. Andrew’s chapel in Belmont. His generosity in giving ‘‘till it hurt,” during the World War and on other occasions are cited as examples of generosity.

In closing the resolutions say: "Perhaps, however, no better proof of Mr. Evarts’ love and generous thought for Christ Church is his resignation itself, expressing his conviction that ‘it is for the good of the parish,’ regardless of how hard it is for himself and his parishioners. “His parishioners can but hope that he will be rewarded by finding in his well-earned relief from his many duties and activities on their behalf an opportunity to enjoy fully for many years his intellectual and social interests which he has so unselfishly suppressed.”
