About Rev. Richard Carpenter Hanks, Sr.

Richard can be easily traced from courthouse records. In Richmond County he purchased 45 acres of land on May 28, 1750. He sold it and his wife, Mary, signed on September 25, 1753. In the deeds he was referred to as the 'Carpenter'; evidently he learned the trade as his father had wished.

He migrated to Dinwiddie County, VA, where his son James was born; thence to Amelia County, VA in 1759 where he purchased 243 acres of land on March 31, 1760. Ten years later, September 4, 1770, he sold the land for 50 pounds, and while he did not move away there is no record that he purchased another farm. By 1780/82 he had 11 in his family. (later copiers read the name as Hawks, a common error made in both Amelia and Grayson Counties, VA) An inference is that 9 of them were children. He migrated later to Guilford Co., NC in 1780 and was granted 200 acres of land on Little Creek in Rowan Co., NC, adjoining the lands of Benjamin Ward and William Bettis. Presumably Richard removed from VA to NC soon after the 1780 census. Eight years later, March 1, 1788, he and his wife, Mary, sold the 200 acres and William Bettis and Benjamin Ward were still neighbors.

This is the last record that has been located of Richard and Mary Hinds Hanks; presumably they spent their declining years with some of their nearby children.

In his application for a pension Richard Hanks, Jr. stated that he-Sr.- entered the Revolutionary War services from Guilford Co., North Carolina -- the inference being that his father, Richard Sr., was living there. Richard Sr. served in the war with 6 of his sons: William, James, Joshua, Richard, Jr., Thomas and David.

Jan. 13, 1896 . . . to settle the question of who was the father of Joshua Hanks Sr. Some of my cousins who are now old men have once known but say they have forgotten but on examination of the deed herewith enclosed satisfies me that this Richard Hanks is the father of Joshua Hanks Sr. The deed made from Richard Hanks to William Dunavant was made when Joshua Hanks Sr. was 10 years old- -this agrees well with what I have heard him say that his father moved to N.C. when he was a small boy. . .1st in Davie Co†and that he Joshua Hanks Sr. had 5 or 6 brothers in the Revolutionary War. . .

NOTES Born in Richmond Co. Va where he married Mary Hinds and where they made their first home.

Deeds show that they moved to Diwiddie Co, Va in 1757 and to Amelia co. in 1760 where Richard bought 243a from William Sammon (DB7-313).

This land was sold in 1770 (DB11-208) after which Richard disappears from the records of Amelia Co.

It is uncertain where he was until he received a land grant of 200 acres in 1780 on Little Creek in Rowan Co. NC.

They may have been in Guilford Co, NC as a son Richard Jr stated in his pension application that he entered military service in that county. The Guilford County court house was burned by Gen Cornwallis in the battle of 1782.

In 1788 Richard and Mary sold the land in Rowan Co.and it is family tradition that Richard moved to Wilkes Co., NC to live with a son and died there.

If true this may have been James or John.

No record of a will or estate settlement has been found but some pubic records, private records and known family kinships indicate that those listed were children of Richard and Mary.
