Obituary, by his daughters:
“ Rev Robert "Bob" H. Pope, died on 6/13/20 at the age of 94 in San Jose, CA. He died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes.
He is survived by three daughters: Cindy (Pope) Liu in San Jose, CA.; Robin Pope of Monroe, NY; Jennifer (Pope) McCarthy in Newburg, N.Y. and his niece Susan Pope in Charlestown, N.H.
Blessed with six grandchildren: Amy (Liu) Luck; Meredith Liu; Heather Moore; Sean Pope-McCarthy; Michael McCarthy and Richard McCarthy.
Also five great-grandchildren: Sierra Masri; Jax Liu; Henry Luck; Charlotte Luck and Peyton Pope-McCarthy.
Predeceased by his father George Ernest Pope, his mother Grace Mary (Horton) Pope, Brother Russel Pope Sr, nephew Russel Pope Jr, and his beloved wife Martha "Joey" Jean (Allen) Pope.
He served in the Army air corps in World War II. He married his beloved wife Martha "Joey" Allen in 1947 and they loved each other for 60 years.
He received his B.S. from the University of Bridgeport in 1951 and his M.S. from Columbia University School of Engineering in 1954. He designed the retrorockets for the first surveyor and first soft landing on the moon. It can be seen hanging in the Smithsonian Institute Air and Space Museum today.
At the age of 36 he had a calling to go into the ministry and went on to graduate from New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1964. From there he served as pastor for The Pascack Reformed Church in Park Ridge, N.J. for 26 years.
In his retirement he did interim preaching near his home in Sidney Center, N.Y.
He was an avid reader, enjoyed vegetable gardening, and became skilled in woodworking, woodcarving and watercoloring. He wrote three books that were published: "A Gift of Doubt "; "Incidental Grace " and "Learning to Speak Zucchini ".
He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed by many.”
