Russell Horton Pope, MD, 86, of Charlestown, died October 5, 2006 at the Haven Health Center in Claremont.
He was born in Stratford, CT on January 18, 1920 the son of George Ernest and Grace (Horton) Pope and had resided in Charlestown for the past twenty years. He was a direct
descendant of Richard Warren of the Mayflower.
He graduated from Yale University in 1942, received his medical degree from John Hopkins Medical School in 1945 and was a Captain in the Army Medical Corps during World War II. Dr. Pope retired in 1983 from the Bridgeport
Hospital in Bridgeport, CT where he was the Chief Pathologist and Director of Laboratories for thirty years and was also an instructor in pathology at Yale Medical School from 1955 to 1965.
Dr. Pope was active in community affairs and was chairman of the Board of Education when they built their first high school in Trumbull, CT. He was active in the Hemophilia Society and the Red Cross Blood Bank.
The surviving family includes his wife, Louise (Lyon) Pope of Charlestown whom he married on May 21, 1943 in Baltimore, MD; one daughter, Susan Pope of Cape Cod, MA; one son, Russell H. Pope, Jr. of Charlestown; one grandson, Aaron Brown of Claremont and one brother, Robert Pope of Sidney, NY.
