SAMUEL L. KEENE was born in Missouri in 1830 and came with his parents and family to Texas in 1852. His father Henry Keene was born in Scott County, Kentucky, moved to Calloway County, Missouri, in 1818. The father of Henry, Samuel L. Keene, and a grandfather of our subject, was also a native of Kentucky and was a son of Samuel Keene, a native of Scotland. The last named left his native hills and went to Ireland and there married a lady named Griffith; the pair came to America before the revolutionary war in which the great-grandfather of our subject, although a Baptist preacher, took part, was imprisoned at Jamestown, and after his release, died at the age of 106. Samuel L. Keene, grandfather of the gentleman whose name heads this sketch, was also a Revolutionary soldier, and died at the age of 101. Henry Keene, father of our subject, was a physician and died in Texas in 1857. The wife of Henry Keene bore the maiden name of Martha Snell: she bore her husband the following children-- Zarelda,
Sarah J., Samuel L., John T., Elizabeth H., Judith, Henry C., George W., Richard, Joseph T., Hopewell, James R., and Mattie.
Samuel L. Keene the subject of this sketch, has been twice married. His first bride was Harriet A. Holt, who bore two children--Mary E. and Newton M.--the mother and children being now deceased. The second marriage of Mr. Keene was with Huldah E. Hawkins, who has borne eleven children, namely - Sarah A., Marion W., James E., Noah P., Samuel P., Laura L., Martha R., Robert, Elizabeth, Walter O., and Mackey M. The first marriage took place in May 1849, and Mrs. Harriet Keene died in 1852 in the journey to Texas. The second marriage took place in this state in 1853.
Mr. Keene, on first coming to this state, secured a head-right to one hundred acres, paying fifty cents per acre. In August 1854, he was elected justice of the peace and served in that capacity eighteen continuous years; he then practiced law in justices courts three ears, and in 1879 commenced preaching; in 1880 was ordained minister of the Missionary Baptist church, the following members of the Presbytery being present; Fountain Jones, Parson James, Deacons N>B>Roberts, F.R. Davis and J.T. Keene.
S.L.Keene took his part in the Civil War, being enlisted, in 1862, in Marshall's squadron, Company B., which was afterwards transferred to Carroll's brigade. He fought at Briarstown, near Fort Smith, at Cane Hill, Talaqua, Fayetteville and Dripping spring, and again upon being thrown from his horse and badly hurt was sent home to resume farming and his public duties.
