About Rev. Thomas Budd, III, Quaker dissident
Rev. Thomas Budd was a graduate of Merton College, University of Oxford. He never came to America. He was an Episcopal clergyrnan; but later he accepted the doctrines of George Fox, renounced his benefice, and suffered bitter persecution for his faith.
He served as the Rector of the parish at Somersetshire, England, and joined the Quakers in 1657. In 1661, he refused to take the oath of obedience to the Church of England; he was arrested and jailed. Thomas spent nine years in Ilchester jail, until his death in 1670.
A Quaker meeting of 7 or 800 people at his orchard was once broken into by five ministers from nearby parishes, leading a mob armed with heavy implements:
Three weeks later he was arrested at a meeting. "We had our clothes torn, some spat upon our heads, others threw cow dung, sticks, dabs of earth at us, and afterwards our Friends that spoke were haled and pulled down from their places. Therefore, as you are set to do justice upon offenders, so I desire that you will make inquiry after such of them as were guilty of that tumult, and let the innocent enjoy their freedom"

England, a minister of the National Church, separated himself from that Church and joined himself to the Quakers. In 1661. He was required to take the "oath of obedience" prescribed by King James the first. Although entirely loyal, he could not take an oath. He was indicted and sent to jail at llchester where he died June 22, 1670, firm in his faith. He was born in 1617. Matriculated at Merlon College, Oxford, in 1633, took his M. A. degree in 1636 and became vicar of Martock in 1630. He married Johanna Knight. daughter of Giles Knight who came to America in the Welcome. His sons were Samuel, who remained in England; and Thomas, John, James and William Budd. who came to Burlington, N. J., in 1678."
