About Rev. William Fletcher, Esq.

Here's what fairly reliable sources provide as far as biography:

  1. He had two children, Rev. Seth Fletcher and Hope Fletcher Stowe
  2. The name of their mother was Mary Jones
  3. Rev. William Fletcher probably lived in Chelmsford, MA around 1649 when Hope Fletcher married Rev. Samuel Stowe
  4. Rev. William Fletcher apparently lived in Oyster River, New Hampshire, which is in the area of Durham where Rev. Seth Fletcher lived in 1656-57
  5. Rev. William Fletcher died in Saco, Maine, where Rev. Seth Fletcher lived, in the late 1660s
  6. He may have been the brother of Robert Fletcher, of Concord

From Fletcher Family History (page 12):

"...There is a family tradition that Robert [of Concord] was accompanied by a brother named William and the town records of Middleton Conn give the marriage of Rev Samuel Stowe to Hope daughter of William Fletcher Esq of Chelmsford in 1649 As Chelmsford was not incorporated till five years later than that time there must be some doubt of the correctness of the entry in all its particulars and as his name is not otherwise found recorded the probability is that if there was such a brother he left no male issue..."

In the Mar. 1989 issue the FLETCHER Family Research Bulletin states:

"Rev. William Fletcher, minister at Oyster River in 1656, but left because of difficulties with the town, intending to return to England. Appparently, he was the one lately returned from New England who was ejected in England in 1662; then back to New England, although Dover made a grant 6 Mar 1661 to one Mr. Fletcher. In Saco Mr. William Fletcher, the only person thus dignified on the town book, was buried 30 Jan. 1667/8. Known children: Seth and Hope, m. by 1650 Rev. Samuel Stowe, her children recorded in Middletown, Connecticut."

See his son, Seth Fletcher's profile. Rev. Seth Fletcher lived in Saco, Maine 1661-1675 and Rev. William Fletcher died during that time in Saco, Maine.
