About Reverend Benedictus Mueller Brackbill

Brackbill (Braechtbuehl, Brechbill, Brechbiel, Brechbuehl, Brechbuehler) a prominent family in the Lancaster Mennonite Conference of Swiss origin. An outstanding figure in the family was Bishop Benedict Brechbuehl of Trachselwald in the Emmental, Canton of Bern, Switzerland. He was arrested in 1709, imprisoned, and the next year banished from Bern. He was active in enlisting the aid of the Dutch Mennonites in behalf of his fellow Swiss exiles in the Palantinate. Married to Maria Herr, daughter of Bishop Hans Herr, he had four children, one of whom, Ulrich, succeeded him as a Minister. In 1717 Bishop Benedict Brackbill, as the name was anglicized, migrated to Lancaster County, Pa., and founded the Strasburg Mennonite congregation. He is said to have been an excellent singer and an able preacher. His death in 1720 marked the loss of the first Mennonite leader in the the Pequea district of the Lancaster Conference. His son Ulrich was killed on the road to Philadelphis to which he was hauling farm produce in 1739. Sixth in line of descent from Benedict was Bishop C.M. Brackbill (1853-1936), also of the Pequea district. Other descendants include Minister Aldus Brackbill (1663-1941), his son M.T. Brackbill of the faculty of Eastern Mennonite College and Minister Milton Brackbill of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference. An Amish couple, V. Brechbiel and wife of France, settled in the Henry County, Iowa in 1855.

The Rev. Benedictus Brackbill (1665 in Aargau, Baden, Switzerland - April 27, 1720 in Lancaster County, Pa), also called Benedict was the first Brackbill (Brechbiel) to emigrate to the new world. A companion of Hans Herr, he and the Mennonite community fled persecution in Palatine Switzerland and settled in Strasburg township.

He was married to Maria Margeretha Herr in Lancaster in 1701, and father of Ulrich, Barbara and Magdalena.

A document from the Brackbill/Brechbiel family history summarizes Benedicts' life : "Rev. Benedictus Brackbill sold his house and farm situated near Weiler in Sape, on the river Werre, Germany for 700 Rix dollars ($570.15). He sailed for America with his wife and three children and arrived in Philadelphia August 24, 1717, having been on the passage for 12 weeks. Their expenses were $30.44 a piece. He bought 250 acres of land for $186.66. This land was between Strasburg and Bunker Hill. He was a Mennonite Preacher and had travelled a great deal in Germany, proclaiming the Blessed Gospel".

Records suggest that Benedict Brackbill, a Taufer (Anabaptist) of Trachselwald, was married to Verena Meister. [4] Archival records at stadtarchiv in Bern, Switzerland state that a Verena Meister, born about 1675, was the daughter of Ulrich Meister, perhaps the same person as Benedict Brackbill's wife. Some have incorrrectly named Maria Herr as the spouse of Benedict Brackbill, born 1665. [4] Theodore Herr, Genealogical Record of Rev. Hans Herr and his direct Lineal Descendants (1980), 788.

Historians maintain that the design of this house is virtually identical to the design of the original home of Johann Anton (hans) Weber which is no longer standing. TWH Married?
