About Reverend George Frederick Stoney
"A native of Terryglass, Co. Tipperary... He was ordained a priest in 1858" - Michael T. Lennon, 'A dictionary of Roscommon biography" (2020).
Address at time of marriage was 10 Trinity College.
According to Crockford's Clerical Directory, there was a Rev. George Fredk. Stoney, A.B. , who was Incumbent of Ballyjamesduff in 1865; and a Rev. George F. Stoney, A.B., who was Curate of Berehaven in 1868. Unlikely as it is, these seem to have been the same person, although normally an incumbent would be unlikely to have been a curate at a later date. The Berehaven curate lost his job in March 1868 apparently because of his sympathy for striking miners at Allihies ('Saothar' 34 (2009) p. 13. Church of Ireland succession lists claim that the Incumbent of Ballyjamesduff stayed in office till his death in 1869, and the Curate of Berehaven (also known by its ecclesiastical name Killaconenagh) does not appear in them.
However, in Thom's Directory of 1867, George F. Stoney is Incumbent of Ballyjamesduff; in Thom's Directory of 1868, C. D. Campbell (curate in 1867) has become Incumbent of Ballyjamesduff and George F. Stoney is Curate of Berehaven: in Thom's Directory of 1869 George F. Stoney is again Incumbent of Ballyjamesduff and there is a vacancy for the position of Curate of Berehaven in charge of the chapel-at-ease of Kilnemanagh (the ecclesiastical name for Allihies).
In the 'Nation' of 16 May 1868, there is a letter from "the Rev. G. F. Stoney, A.M., late Protestant Curate of Berehaven Mines," giving his address as Holly Park, Birr. This was his wife Jane Stoney née Legge's address at the time of their marriage.
In the 'Cork examiner' of 14 May 1869, the Rev. Thos. Carmody, P.P., records subscriptions received for the Relief Fund of the Widows and Orphans of the Berehaven Boatmen, including "The Rev. George F. Stoney (the late much esteemed and beloved Protestant Curate of the Mines)".
The 'Cork examiner' of 26 August 1869 records the death of "The Rev. G. F. Stoney, M.A., Rector of Ballyjamesduff, second son of the late Rev. Ralph Stoney, M.A., of Terryglass, co. Tipperary."
The civil register of deaths records George Frederick Stoney dying in 1869 at the age of 43 in the Bailieborough registration district, which included Shercock.
In 'Some old annals of the Stoney family' (1879), Major (Franc) Stoney records his brother the Rev. George Frederick as marrying a wife of the Stoney surname.
Burke's 'Irish Family Records' records the Rev. George Frederick Stoney (1826-1869), son of the Rev. Ralph, as marrying Jane Stoney née Legge in 1857, and living at Holly Park, Co. Offaly.
The Visitation of Ireland by Ulster King-of-Arms (1897-1918) records "Rev. George Frederick Stoney of Holly Park, King's County; born 2 January, bapt. at Terryglass 14 February 1826; of Trinity College, Dublin, M.A.; died 18 August, bur. at Lorrha, co. Tipperary, 21 August 1869."
The conclusion must be that all these records refer to the one man, and that he took some sort of leave from his duties in Ballyjamesduff to take up an apparently more junior position at Berehaven, though the reason for this is not apparent.
