Joseph matriculated to Harvard College in the class of 1655; however he left for England without finishing his degree. In England on April 4, 1655 he became the rector of South Hanningfield in Essex, being presented by Hugh Peter.[2]
Joseph Farnworth (Farnsworth) died in or near London before August 7, 1677. His name was included in a William Hooke list of nonconformist ministers who had recently died.[2]
Richard Baxter wrote that Farnworth had seen a human sacrifice made to the devil by "savages in America," and he also said that Farnworth, "being a Nonconformist, and extream poor, dyed, as all about him said, of meer Poverty, for want of warm Cloaths, Fire, and Food when the Act of Uniformity had begger'd many into extream necessity."[2]

- His father's will, dated 2 Jan 1659 at Dorchester, Suffolk County, MA, mentioned his wife Mary (executrix), her children Joseph and Thomas Long by her other husband, daughter Elizabeth wife of John Manfeild, daughter Ester, daughter Mary wife of Abraham Ripley, grandchild Joseph Peck son of Simon Peck who married daughter Hannah dec'd, daughter Rebecca, eldest son Joseph, 4 daughters (not named), and son Samuel (under 21).[5]
