"Joshua Hawkins (b. 1780), the second great grandfather of the author, was born in Maryland. He was married twice and was a father of eleven children. His first wife was Cassa Tracy. Family lived in Virginia and Ohio, where Joshua Hawkins was a lay minister for the Methodist Church.

Rev. William Hawkins (1766-1855) was born in Maryland and died in PawPaw Twp., Marion Co., W.Va. (formerly a part of Monongalia & Harrison Counties, Virginia). He was married three times and fathered fifteen children."
