He was the son of John Ashmore and Mary Purnell.

He married Margery Lindley 1736 in Lancaster Co., PA, daughter of James Lindley and Alice Walsmith. She was born 30 APR 1712 in Bally Brumhill, County Carlow, Ireland, and died in York Co., PA. Margery Lindley 1st partnered with Joshua Hadley. After the death of Richard Ashmore in 1747, she married 2nd to John Nelson (died in 1754), 3rd to William McGarraugh (died in 1759), and 4th to James Dixon / Dickson (died in 1767). Dickson did not name a wife but in the court records he is named.

Their children include

In name of God, amen. I, Richard Ashmore of Lower Hellam township in ye county of Lancaster & Province of Pensilvania, tavernkeeper, being very sick & weak in body, but of perfect mind & memory, thanks be to God therefore calling into mind ye mortality of my body & knowing it is appointed for all men once to die, do make & ordain this my last will & testament, that is to say, Principally and first of all, I give & recommend my soul into ye hands of God ye gave it; and for my body I recommend it to ye earth to be buried in a Christian like & decent manner at ye discretion of my executors, nothing doubting but at ye general resurrection I shall receive ye same again by ye mighty power of God. And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I do order ye in ye first place all my just debts & funeral charges be paid & satisfied.

Item..Give & bequeath to Margery, my dearly beloved wife & children my whole estate of goods & chattels in maner & form following, viz, immediately after my decease all my goods & chattels be aprised & valued by two reasonable men.

Item.. My wife Margery, to have the management of all my whole goods & chattels whilst she remains a widow, that is to say giving security if it required to produce the estate in as full & valuable as when prised & by ye the other administer & as soon as she marries ye whole estate is to be divided in equall shares between her & all my children & she to only one child's part or equall to one of ye children. Likewise her son Joshua to be equall in shares with ye rest & if she never marries ye is to say, my wife shall enjoy ye of all my goods.

Item, I likewise constitute make & ordain Charles Calvall & my dearly beloved wife Margery only sole executors of this my last will & testament, & I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke & disanull all & every other former testaments, wills, legacies & executors by me in any ways before this time named, willed & bequeath, rectifying & confirming this & no other to be my last will & testament in witness where of I have hereunto set my hand & seal ye day & year above written. his Witness testament Richard x Ashmore mark Thomas Willson, Alex'dr Steele, Denis Laverty
