Richard Bailey, son of Joseph Bailey (1711-1748) and Martha BOYNTON Bailey Morss (1710-after 1769), was an early settler in that part of Pownalborough, Maine, which later became Alna. He was a brother to Nathan Bailey, who settled in Whitefield Maine.
Richard Bailey was married to Susanna Pillsbury about 1762, and had five children, who are listed in his 1812 Probate records, and linked to him below.
He is enumerated on the 1766 census of the east side of Pownalborough, Maine, as head of a family of four, whose ages and sexes match himself, his wife, daughter Elizabeth, and brother Nathan. Richard's home was a one story log house with one fireplace, and boasted twelve squares of sash glass in its windows, a luxury enjoyed by less than half of the families.
A Revolutionary soldier, Richard was commissioned a second lieutenant in Captain Dan Scott's Company of the Second Lincoln County regiment on 23 August 1776.
Richard served as a selectman of Alna, and held other positions in early town affairs. He owned a pew in the Alna Meeting House.
Richard Bailey and his wife were buried in a family cemetery located on land he owned on Springbrook Hill on Rte. 218 in Alna near the Whitefield line. Only two stones remain, which are those of Samuel and Anna Palmer. A house has been built over the site believed to be the graves of Richard Bailey and Susanna Pillsbury Bailey. Note: There is no marker.
