About Richard Baldwin
Biography
Richard Baldwin was born in Buckinghamshire, England. Richard, son of Sylvester Baldwin, Sr. and Jane Wells was born about 1585 in the parish of Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, England.[1]
Richard married Phillipa Corbman about April 1607 in Aylesbury, England. They had six children, who were baptized in the Aston Clinton parish of St. Leonard's near Wendon in Buckinghamshire:[2]
Rebecca (bp. 23 Jun 1611) Alice (bp. 22 Aug 1613) John of Billerica, MA (bp. 19 Feb 1614/5; d. 25 Sep 1697), m. at Woburn, MA, Mary Richardson Jane (bp. 12 Apr 1618), m. Thomas Brigginshaw in Aston Clinton Henry of Woburn, MA (bp. 8 Feb 1623; d. 14 Feb 1698), [3] m. at Woburn, MA, Phebe Richardson Sarah (bap. 23 Mar 1528; d. aft 1661, Buckinghamshire, England), m. by 1651 at Branford, MA, Richard Lawrence.
NOTE: Sarah was named in her uncle Henry Baldwin's will dated 11 September 1661, with money and a piece of property left to him by his deceased brother Richard (Sarah's father).[4].
Possible Migration with Children
In his Notes on the Baldwin Family, C. C. Baldwin indicates that Richard Baldwin, along with daughter Jane were known to have been in Braintree, Massachusetts in 1637 and it has been surmised that Richard may be the father to Henry of Woburn and John of Billerica. Richard, brother to the immigrant Sylvester, would have likely returned to England himself as his wife, Phillipa, was buried in Aston Clinton on 30 July 1641. Jane would likely have returned with her father given that she married Thomas Briggenshaw in Aston Clinton in 1643.[5]Henry of Woburn was a witness to his brother John Baldwin of Billerica's will in 1686 reinforcing this family relationship.[6]
Uncertain Death Date
Richard was mentioned in his grandmother, Alice (Kinge) Baldwin's will dated 4 June 1622 (Page 27), and his uncle Richard's will dated 18 February 1632 (Page 34). He is not mentioned in his brother Henry's will dated 11 September 1661; however, his daughter Sarah received property that had belonged to her father. If he was the Richard Baldwin who was briefly in Boston with daughter, Jane, in 1637 and returned prior to his wife's burial on 30 July 1641, the timeline suggests he died some time after 1641 and before 1661.[7]
