Richard Clarke was probably born in England between 1630-1640 and came to the American colonies in the 1650’s. There has been much speculation about his birthplace and parentage, but according to most reputable genealogists, no proof has been found to substantiate any theory.
In 1657 Richard Clark, Sr. served in the Indian War, which was largely fought in MA. He married about 1660 Elisabeth LNU (like iis origins, there is much speculation regarding his wife’s las name, but again no definitive proof has been shown) He lived in Southold, Long Island, in 1661 through 1678, where Richard Jr. was born.
In about 1678 Richard and Elizabeth Clark took their daughter, Elizabeth, and five sons, Richard, John, Joshua, Samuel (who settled in Westfield), and Ephraim to Elizabeth, NJ. Two additional sons, Benjamin and Thomas, were born after their arrival in NJ.
Clark, is the way some information shows this last name to be spelled.

Is first seen at Southold, Long Island, NY, in the late 1650's. He pursued the ship building trade there until 1678, when he removed with his family of six children to Elizabethtown, Essex County, NJ, and settled in the Rahway section. He continued with his ship building in Elizabethtown. 2

These presents witnesseth that I John Conckelyne of Hashamommocle, yeoman, in consideration of ten pounds do grant and sell unto Richard Clarke, shipwright, of Southold, all that whom lott in Southold adjoyning to the lott of Thomas Moore iun. on the West and Wm. Wells of the East together with all the houses and fruit trees in and upon the same:--- The twelve acres of Woodland adjoyning to the highway that goeth along to the South end of the North Sea lotts:--The acre of Land in the Old field:--All the meadow in the Hogg Neck belonging to the said whom lott, and half of the meadow at the Oyster ponds therunto belonging together with commons and commons of pasture after the rate of a first lott only in the antient bounds of Southold (and not in Oysterpond Neck Churchang or Occabauck) and which presises were formerly of John Conklynes Senr. and by him give to John Conkelyn, iun. Be it known unto all men by these presents yt I, Richard Clark of Elizabeth Town in New Jersey shipcarpenter have for a valuable consideration, sold and by these presents do sell unto John Solomon of Southold (excepting a piece of meadow) that is to say All my housing, house lott orchyards garden yard and all my fencing, with twelve acres of woodland lying towards the North Sea, and an acre of Land in ye old field with a piece of meadow in Hogneck and a first lott commonage in ye Old Town bounds with all the priviledges unto them belonging: All which I purchased of John Conckline June.--and I ingage to save harmless the said John Solomon, from any right or interest my wife Elizabeth may challenge in said housing and Lands. Richard & Elizabeth Clarke came to Elizabeth Town in 1678 from Southold, Long Island, New York, as part of the migration of English settlers to New Jersey. In Feb. 1679/80 Richard obtained a warrant for 300 acres of land "In right of himself, his wife, his sons Richard, John and his daughter Elizabeth Clark." These 3 children were of sufficient age (14 yr.) at the time to have an allotment of land granted their father for them. In 1678 he had purchased land of Caleb Carwithy at Luke Watson's Point. Other children named in his Will were: Samuel, Joshua, Ephraim, Thomas and Benjamin. His son Thomas was the Grandfather of Abraham Clark, the Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Besides the land purchased from Caleb Carwithy, he bought land of Samuel Oliver, land adjoining land of Joshua Marsh, Abraham Clark, Andrew Hampton, and John Craig. New Jersey Colonial Documents: "Calendar of Wills, 1697, April 9. Clarke, Richard of Elizabeth Town. Inventory of the estate of 159 pounds 5 and land 1/2, all personal, including a negro woman and child, valued at 32 pounds. He died on a journey to New York." New Jersey Archives, XXI., pg. 260. 6
Charles Carroll Gardner, in Genealogical Collections 1665-1800, Vol. 29 Clark, writes: "Richard Clarke, the founder of the Elizabethtown Clark family and great-grandfather of Abraham Clark, signer of the Declaration of Independence, is first found at Southampton, L.I. in 1661. He was married about 1660 to Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). In 1664, he owned uplands there. By 1675 he had moved to Southold, L.I., and about 1678 he took his family to Elizabethtown, Essex Co., (now Union Co.,) NJ. In 1694 the name of Richard Clarke appears as a contributor to the support of Rev. John Harriman, pastor of the Eliazabethtown Church. " 6

Richard Clark was a shipbuilder. He arrived in Eastern Massachusetts in 1671. He then moved to Long Island and served as anapprentice to Thomas Moore, shipbuilder. Some believe he married Moore's daughter. In 1675 he lived in Southhold, Long Island, New York. In 1678 he was in the Rahway area of Elizabeth, New Jersey. In 1679 he patented 300 acres near Rockaway, Morris Co., New Jersey. He died on the way to New York in 1697.
