His date of birth was given by Smith (1978) who wrote that the baptismal register at St. Mary's showed this date of birth. Clarence De Meillon wrote (pers. commun. 2017) that he was baptized on 11 Jan 1852 in St. Mary's (Port Elizabeth) and that Henry Clifford De Meillon and Barbara Enslin are given as his parents, with witnesses Anna Sophia and Henry Shepard.

This date of birth fits with other records such as that he was a trooper in Matabeleland in 1893 and a witness to the baptism of Annie Sophie De Meillon in 1888.
