Richard Godfrey Jr., was perhaps the son of Richard & Margaret (Temple) Godfrey,[1]%29 was born probably by 1631, perhaps in Lancashire, England. He arrived in the New World at Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts, sometime prior to 1652 where he remained for the rest of his life. He married twice. His first wife (given name possibly Jane) was a daughter of John & Jane (--?--) Turner, whom he married about 1650, before the birth of his first child about 1651. No marriage record appears to be extant. In 1652, he settled in a part of Tauton called Squawbetty "near the old forge, now Raynham."[2] His second wife, Mary (--?--), was the widow of James Phillips, and was named in Richard's will. Richard married her on 26 March 1684 in Taunton.[2] He died, probably at Taunton, on 16 October 1691.[2]

The will of "Richard Godfree, sen'r." of Taunton dated 4 Oct 1691, proved 17 November 1691, names son Robert Godfree; daughter Jane, wife of John Cobb; daughter Alice, the wife of Peter Holbrook; daughter Susanna, the wife of Edward Kettle; son Richard Godfrey; son John Godfree; and "my loving wife Mary Godfree."[3][4] The will is now missing from the probate packet, but it's contents were extracted before its loss.[2]

He married, first, about 1650, ____ Turner, the daughter of John Turner Jr and Jane ____ Turner of Lynn,MA. Older genealogy sources indicate her name to have been "Jane", as she had a daughter and a mother with that name, but this has not been found and must be regarded as unproven for now.
He married, second, on Mar 24,1684 at Taunton,MA, Mary ____ Phillips, widow of James Phillips.

A more recent genealogy Footprints in the Sand: The Godfrey Story (2012) places his birth as early as 1620, in Lancashire, and calls his parents Richard Godfrey (b.1598 Wales) and Margaret (Temple) Godfrey (b.1601). However, this is unsourced.
